Not sure on the strategy of using him as a long man. Why not just let him start then?

Best guess is that maybe his stuff is okay for primarily mop-up work but you don't want him leading the rodeo every five days. Not sure, though.

3 IP, no hits, 2 K's, 2 BB's yesterday for Hobgood.

Where is Joe Van Meter? He was announced as a starter for Frederick, but he hasn't pitched yet and isn't even listed on the roster.

I'd be interested in seeing what Hobgood can do as a starter. He's only 1 year older than Kline and Bridwell.

I'd be interested in seeing what Hobgood can do as a starter. He's only 1 year older than Kline and Bridwell.

Hobgood will be used strictly in the pen. He will make the major league bullpen or be left unprotected. He has no Rabbi in the organization.

I've decided that getting Hunter Harvey with the 22nd pick is our payback for using the 5th pick on Hobgood. We're even now.

Although most/many major league relievers come up through the organization(s) as starters, maybe they've decided that is not his future and want him to get accustomed to coming in later in the game/not starting/having men on/coming in with a situation to get out of? I don't know, just speculating.

The Tigers have starters Tarik Skubal and, gulp, Jack Flaherty that may interest Elias. The Angels could offer lefty veteran starter Tyler Anderson, veteran closer/reliever Carlos Estevez, and perhaps RHH COF Taylor Ward. The A's have guys that would be of help, if available, in closer Mason Miller and reliever Lucas Erceg. The White Sox could offer starter/reliever Garrett Crochet, starter Erick Fedde, and reliever Michael Kopech.  CF Luis Robert Jr. seems unlikely for us but should be mentioned. The Cubs could offer starter Jamison Taillon. The Marlins have lefty closer Tanner Scott and that's about all I see, as far as fits. The Rockies have veteran starter Cal Quantrill and lefty reliever Jalen Beeks to offer.

      Adley was 23 when he was in Bowie. When Basallo is 23 he will be playing in parts of his 4th MLB season. That’s with giving him a full season in the milb before his debut next year. Adley has a .684 OPS when catching this year. Catching is hard.

      I appreciate you taking time to add some subtext to some of the situations. But again, the Padres didn’t have a community that was “crazy about baseball” until they’re owner starting spending and landing stars. Now the are near the tops in MLB attendance. Hint - they didn’t even sell out regularly when they had one of the greatest hitters ever (Tony Gwynn). But once they started spending seriously and showing their fans that they were seriously investing, it’s amazing how that changed. The Rangers were rarely a “big club” until recently when their owner started to spend.  It’s exhausting repeating ad nauseum that ownership matters and the extent to which they are willing to invest in the product to draw/retain attention in the market has a tremendous impact. So we can just agree to cut it off here before we go around in circles while doing this dance. Many/most posters here don’t agree that the owner should make serious/meaningful expenditures and would rather worry about nickle and dimming a player out of his few millions while the owner takes in billions. That’s fine. That’s just not for me.

      I really wouldn't like to trade Kjerstad, honestly. Strikes me as a special bat, just below the level of Mayo.  Mateo, Urias, Hays, Mountcastle, O'Hearn, Santander, Stowers, Norby, Bradfield Jr., De Leon, etc. are all people I'd trade before him.

      Holliday, Mayo, Basallo.    Would have to be blown away for Kjerstad and Cowser.    Shopping Stowers and Norby.    Driving Hays to the airport. Urias, too.    Anyone that’s not Gunnar and Adley can be had.

      I watched end of Astros and Blue Jays game.  Trevor Richard’s could be a nice second piece as a trade option for the bullpen.  He is having solid year .139/.222/.264/.486 line is very nice.  He is signed just for the year at 2.5 million so guy you could get for late teen type prospect.  Judd Fabian for Richard’s would seem like decent trade.

      Among the prospects who aren't already [semi] regulars, anyone not named Mayo, Basallo, Kjerstad or Holliday.  Even Kjerstad could go in the right deal for a starter but I probably wouldn't like it.  Among the position players 27 and over, any of them in the right deal but not more than two.
