Season Ticket Prices Going Up

"The Orioles are instituting single-game dynamic pricing, in which prices fluctuate depending on the demand for a specific game, meaning there will be no more fixed-price tickets.

More than a dozen major league clubs, both big and small market alike, have instituted some type of dynamic pricing in recent years, including the Chicago Cubs, Minnesota Twins, New York Mets, Oakland Athletics, San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals.

Under dynamic pricing, prices for single-game tickets against popular teams like the division-rival New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox or the regional-rival Washington Nationals likely will rise as the date approaches. Popular promotions and weekend and holiday dates also could trigger a spike in price as the game nears."

This sounds horrible. I hate this change. So now $9 Tshirt day turns into maybe $20 Tshirt day? This is a huge blow to walkup sales. No more fixed price tickets. Disgusting.

Dyanmic pricing where the price changes each day due to demand for the game? Geez I think I am out. I already decided to not get season tickets and now I doubt I will go to any games next year. I guess they saw how well dynamic pricing works for the airlines (bankruptcies) they want to do it for sporting events.

I do have to laugh at all of you who paid for playoff tickets in advance and now are stuck getting plans this year. I told you that was a waste of money.

this is a stunning development to me. How is this not getting more negative press?

Now the club's 81 home dates will be divided into five difference pricing levels, from six “value” games, including weekday games against the Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays, to five “elite” games, including Opening Day and Saturday-night games against the Yankees, Red Sox and Cardinals.

Those elite games against the Yankees and the Red Sox are on September 13 and 20. I wonder if anyone will even care by then. I foresee a return to the Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park South days. That seems to be what the FO is going for.

This whole thing has made me really angry. I can see no getting into the free agency bidding as guys just get overpaid and then you end up guys who you are paying who aren't even playing anymore but the ticket nonsense has got out of hand. I guess I will just watch the games on TV. I went to 16 games and had lower boxes last year. I am sure I won't be missed.

This teams ownership is a complete joke. The team will be so much better off when it's free of the Angelos family.

So if by chance you want to hit a game one night...you now have no clue how much it will cost? Boy that sounds really fan friendly. Could be $10...could be $20.

Just wrote this:

The Orioles just announced that they will be raising season ticket prices by 5%.

Let that settle in for a second. OK, on the surface this isn't such a big deal. It's the first increase since 2008. And honestly the team prior to 2012 and 2013 couldn't raise season ticket prices without looking like a bigger joke than they already were.

But the timing of this announcement makes me feel that the Orioles PR staff were dropped on their collective heads at birth. Here's a rundown:

Team Salary (2011-2013)

In 2011: $88.2 million

In 2012: $84.8 million

In 2013: $92.2 million

Source: Baseball Prospectus

According to FanGraphs, MLB teams will receive an additional $25 million more a year due to new MLB TV contracts.

Brian Roberts contract is no longer on the books, so that saves the team $10 million/year.

Before even factoring in the Jim Johnson trade, the Orioles have an additional $35 million that they could (SHOULD!) spend.

Now, as well all know, Jim Johnson (and his $10 million salary) was recently traded to the Oakland Athletics for essentially a bag of balls (Jemile Weeks and the wonderful Player To Be Named Later).

So, Brian Roberts ($10 million), Jim Johnson ($10 million) gone.

New TV deal money ($25 million) in.

That's a total of $45 million extra available money. Now, this doesn't count the salary increases from arbitration or the recent signings/walks...but that's a very large number.

All of that said, over the last 2 weeks, it has been a very, very busy Hot Stove for MLB.

Robinson Cano signs with the Mariners for 10 years, $240 million

Curtis Granderson signs with the Mets for 4 years, $60 million

Scott Feldman signs with the Astros for 3 years, $30 million

Jacoby Ellsbury signs with the Yankees for 7 years, $148 million

Carlos Beltran signs with the Yankees for 3 years, $45 million

Nate McLouth signs with the Nationals for 2 years, $10.75 million

With all that said, the Orioles have signed/claimed/traded:

Signed Kelvin De La Cruz (LHP) to one year contract (relief pitcher)

Signed Edgmer Escalona to one year contract (relief pitcher)

Claimed Cord Phelps (INF) from Indians

Signed Steve Pearce (OF) to one year contract

Signed Nolan Reimold to one year contract

Traded Jim Johnson to Oakland for Jemile Weeks and a PTBNL

Signed Ryan Webb (RHP) to 2 year contract ($4.5 million) (relief pitcher)

And they're working on signing Francisco Peguero.

FWIW, it was even confirmed by Dan Duquette that they didn't even make a formal offer to McLouth or Feldman. Now, this could be seen as a GOOD thing, if they're indeed in on Choo, Garza, etc. But I doubt it.

In case you're wondering, their 40 man roster is nearly full. Granted they can cut some loose weight, and trade some players (Matusz, Patton I'm looking at you)..but it's nearly full.

So, a bunch of relief pitchers, traded their closer for an infielder, and a few OF'ers with not much ability.

In the midst of ALL of this, the Orioles have decided to announce that they're raising season ticket prices.

Here's a hint O's PR staff. How about you announce a SIGNIFICANT signing before screwing your most loyal fans?

I've been a season ticket holder since 2007. And right now this is a huge misstep by the O's PR department.

Aside from extending your own stars (Brian Roberts, Adam Jones, Nick Markakis, etc.) over the years, does anyone have ANY confidence that Peter Angelos will actually open his pocket book? Especially with an extra $45 million available?

In case you need any more reason not to have a lick of confidence in Peter Angelos, here are the "BIG" free agent signings over the last 10 years:

2004: Javy Lopez for a 3 year, $22.5 million deal, Miguel Tejada for a 6 year, $72 million deal

2006: Ramon Hernandez for a 4 year, $27.5 million deal

2007: Aubrey Huff for a 3 year, $20 million deal

If there are others that I'm missing, let me know. But in the grand scheme of things, the Orioles just don't sign high dollar free agents. Especially not for long contracts (aside from Miguel Tejada). And especially not starting pitchers.

I want to remain hopeful that there is some chance in hell that the Orioles do the right thing and sign a Matt Garza type as well as Shin-Soo Choo (who has a career OBP of 389).

But I just can't see it happening.

We don't have to be the Yankees and spend out the wazoo. But we aren't the Tampa Bay Rays. We can carry a $90-$100 million payroll. And some would argue we should be carrying a $120 million payroll.

Unfortunately Peter Angelos is handcuffing Dan Duquette.

And the O's PR department is driving the dagger in deeper.

Shame on you, Peter Angelos.

Shame on you, Orioles.

If there are big moves planned for the future, this news comes simply at a laughably awkward time.... one that we'll chuckle over in a month or two.

If there are no big moves planned for the future, the Orioles have completely lost touch with their fanbase.

Baltimore Sun Sports: The Orioles plan to raise season-ticket prices by about 5 percent and expand dynamic pricing.

http://bit.ly/1d7cuuL Txt STOP 2 quit

No way. They can't possibly be so completely oblivious and inept as to release this info on the same day that two of their players from last year's team sign with other clubs without even getting a formal offer from the Orioles and without any sort of obvious replacement plan in place...

Can they???

    • Yeah the amenities are pretty outdated at the yard and they seem to do nothing year over year to improve them. The touchscreens have been banged on to death to the point they barely function, so you can't accurately fill out your order at the kiosks, and they don't have a way for the people behind the counter to ring you up at many of the food places. The sound is low to non-existent in certain sections of the club level, like around 218. Seems like there should be speakers that reach there but they might have been damaged by rain, etc. and they are too lazy to fix them. If you go to a game that's even slightly busy, you will wait forever to get into the bathroom, and the sink will be an absolute mess with no soap or paper towels. It's even worse on the club level where they have one sink that's right by the door. Nearby businesses don't care, either. The Hilton parking garage reeks of decay, pot and human waste. They don't turn on the air circulation fans, even if cars are waiting for an hour and a half to exit from P3, filling up the air with carbon monoxide. They only let you enter the stadium with one 20 oz bottle of water. It's so expensive to buy a drink or water in the stadium, but with all the salty food, 20 oz of water isn't enough, especially on a hot day. Vegetarian food options are poor to none, other than things like chips, fries, hot pretzels and the occasional pizza. Vida Taco is better, but at an inconvenient location for many seats. The doors on the club level are not accessible. They're anti-accessible. Big, heavy doors you have to go through to get to/from the escalators, and big, heavy doors to get to your seats, none of them automatic (or even with the option to be automatic with a button press). Makes it hard to carry food out to your seats even if not handicapped. The furniture in the lounges on the club level seem designed to allow as few people as possible to sit down. Not great when we have so many rain delays during the season. Should put more, smaller chairs in and allow more of the club level ticket holders to have a seat while waiting for thunderstorms to pass. They keep a lot of the entrance/exit gates closed except for playoff/sellout games, which means people have to slowly "mooooo" all the way down Eutaw St to get to parking. They are too cheap to staff all the gates, so they make people exit by the warehouse, even though it would be a lot more convenient for many fans to open all the gates. Taking Light Rail would be super convenient, except that if there's at least 20k fans in attendance, it's common to have to wait 90-120 minutes to be able to board a non-full train heading toward Glen Burnie. A few trains might come by, but they are already full, or fill up fast when folks walk up to the Convention Center stop to pre-empt the folks trying to board at Camden Station. None of the garages in the area are set up to require pre-payment on entry (reservation, or give them your card / digital payment at the entrance till). If they were, emptying out the garage would be very quick, as they wouldn't need to ticket anyone on the way out: if you can't get in without paying, you can always just leave without having to stop and scan your phone or put a ticket in the machine. They shut down the Sports Legends Museum at Camden Station in 2015 because the Maryland Stadium Authority was too greedy. That place was a fun distraction if you were in the area when a game wasn't about to start, like if you show up super early on Opening Day or a playoff day. Superbook's restaurant on Eutaw is a huge downgrade from Dempsey's in terms of menu and service quality. Dempsey's used to be well-staffed, you could reserve a table online, and they had all kinds of great selection for every diet. Superbook seems like just another bar serving the same swill that the rest of the park serves, with extremely minimal and low-quality food. For that matter, most of the food at the stadium is very low quality these days. A lot of things we used to love are made to a lower standard now if they are served at all. These are gripes about the stadium and the area that haven't changed my entire adult life. Going to an O's game requires one to tolerate many small inconveniences and several major inconveniences, any number of which could easily be fixed by the relevant authorities if they gave a damn about the people who pay to come see the team play. You would think a mid-market team would be able to afford to invest in the fan experience. You would think the city and partnering organizations like garages, the Stadium Authority and MTA would at least try to do their part to make the experience enjoyable and free of kinks. You would think they would put some thought into handling the "growing pains" of the fanbase due to recent renewed interest after the dark years. Instead, all we get is the same indifference and the same annoyances year in and year out. The whole area is overdue for a revamp. Not sure if $600 mil will get it done, but at least it's a start. Hopefully they can start to patch up some of the many holes in the fan experience. If you're not going to invest in Burnes, at least make it so paying customers have an easier, more enjoyable time getting to/from the stadium and having some food while we're there.
    • Elias has only been in rebuild mode with the O's so there's not much to speculate on there.  Houston, where he spent his formative years, doesn't seem to like to be on the hook for more than a couple of big long-term contracts at any given time.  I can see that as being Elias' choice as well, albeit with a lower overall cost - Houston runs a big payroll.  But it's all guesswork.  I really don't know. If Elias takes the 2025 payroll to $150 million it will creep up to $200 million or so by 2028 just from keeping the core together.  That's where I start to wonder about sustainability due to market size, economic forces, etc., etc., etc... If it were up to me, I would add a couple of free agents this offseason even if the contracts were longer than ideal and be conservative about extensions elsewhere until the prospects establish themselves a little better.  I think there's a competitive opportunity that the team is already into that's worth exploiting. I think ownership is very happy to have Elias on board and they're not inclined to force him to do anything.  I also think Rubenstein's demonstrated business prowess is great enough to assume that he has had plenty enough time to come to a mutual understanding with Elias as to goals.
    • We need a RH O’hearn…in addition to Westburg. At least 3 batters that will push up the pitch count and cause damage in the top 5 of the lineup.
    • Boy,  that Jackson Merrill is a good young player that is playing his best ball down the season stretch and in the playoffs.   He's only 21.  I guess some young guys are able to play up to the pressure.   Who could have guessed that?
    • I’m aware.   You are arguing something im Not.
    • What agreement? The agreement you are talking about happened as a result of the move.  The MASN agreement would not have existed if Angelos had gone to court to block the move.
    • I’m saying the Os had an agreement with MLB and that should have held up.  Been pretty clear about that.
