Listening to Vin Scully monolog his way through a broadcast with stories of a haunted hotel David Price stayed at in Scranton that don't have a punchline. It's a little like the following Jack Handy:

I remember we were all horrified to see Grandpa up on the roof with his Superman cape on. "Get down!" yelled Uncle Lou. "Don't move!" screamed Grandma. But Grandpa wouldn't listen. He walked to the edge of the roof and stuck out his arms, like he was going to fly. I forget what happened after that.

Don't get me wrong, it's remarkable Scully can do what he does at age 88. But on a non-age-adjusted basis, he's not a very good baseball announcer.

If you had told me in January that the O's would be tied for first in late July 2020 with a .667 win percentage, I'd have laughed at you.  Yes, that was tongue in cheek.

I think Scully is the very best. When we played LAD I listened to him over Gary and Palmer. His stories are more interesting than watching NL baseball. But then I remember Red Barber and Ernie Harwell. You probably wouldn't care for them either.

Interesting and good stats, but I just don't see the W total getting there this season. You have too many head to head in a 3 horse race. In the past it's generally been a 1 horse or 2 horse race if I'm remembering correctly.

I'm with you. I think there is less than a 50% chance the division will have 2 teams win 93 games this season. I'd say it's more like 30% that there will be 2 teams with 94 wins.

So while the winning team may have 97, the 2nd place team is likely to have 92 or fewer, which is **close** to saying 93 wins is what it will take to win the division. It's not exactly the same, because the teams play each other, so 97 wins (say) reduces the chance of another team getting 93.

I heard Scully do broadcasts 30 years ago and he was outstanding, but he's made concessions to age. Chuck Thompson was outstanding and we heard some of the same things happen to him as well as he got older. It won't ever diminish who either was in his prime.

I have heard Harwell's call of the 9th inning of Wilhelm's no-no, but I don't believe I have ever heard a recording of Red Barber doing a game.

We only have to go back to 2012 to find the Yankees winning 95, the Orioles winning 93 and the Rays winning 90, all in the same year. And last year, the Cards won 100, the Pirates 98 and the Cubs 97, all in the AL Central.

Whether 2 AL teams could reach 93 this year probably depends on how competitive the Yankees will be down the stretch now that they've traded Chapman, Miller, Nova and Beltran. They play each of Baltimore, Toronto and Boston 9-10 more times. If they continue to hold up as a .500ish team, it may be tough for two teams to win 93. If they fold down the stretch, it won't be so hard.

      Picking at 22 and 32 we have a chance to nab some guys with resumes. Benge, Brecht, Honeycutt, Amick, White, Culpepper, and one of the NCAA C if we want. Hopefully we can get two of those guys when we pick. Developing pitching and keeping it healthy is hard. With our recent history with bats it might be good to keep growing them. Benge and White/Amick would be ideal. They could be real close to Bowie this time next year.

      Hopefully, Santander is Tuck’s replacement. He is worthy, and his hard work should be rewarded if there is room.  Kimbrel would have been nice, but Clay Holmes, when rested and healthy, has much better stuff. I know the numbers are poor for him at the moment, but he is nasty. Kimbrel is a gutty vet who used to be incredibly tough. His selection this year would have been about his career and legacy. That is not a popular take on this board, so be it. Westburg and Mountcastle can use the time off. Both are supposed to be fairly banged up at the moment. O’Hearn is just another guy I would have loved to see make it. A grinder, who exemplifies the blue collar fan base of Baltimore. A great story, but mostly a platoon guy.

      Outside of any of the "snubs" losing out of any potential bonuses, I don't care. I'd almost rather see them getting a solid break mid season anyways.

      I think there is a better term than "angry" to describe some of the O's. Anger seldom results in anything positive. Now, playing with attitude is another thing. GH is certainly the "King" of attitude on this team, no one is going to beat him. I believe there are several position players that show attitude in different ways. Pitchers?? SP throw 90 or so pitches. They can't afford to display emotions or they would be worn out much earlier. They also can't afford to have the "deer in the headlights" look. Of the O's starters, I believe CP is in that world at present. It's mainly an experience and growth thing.  GR, IMO, has approved significantly in that department over the last year.

      On close examination of Kjerstad today (July 7), I hope he is not part of any trade package. This kid is a bull, with power potential that is off the charts.  He runs surprisingly well and that throw to the plate from left was very impressive, if a bit high. I can see him planted in left field for a long time, perhaps in a platoon with Hays the rest of the year, but eventually full time if he proves able to hit southpaws.

      I totally get it.  It’s a huge risk vs. reward situation, but getting someone like him (if he’s still strong) or Skubal could make a major difference come October for you guys over the next three seasons.
