Cards @ Baltimore in August -- What Should I Know about Camden, Baltimore, etc?

Come on, really? A few blocks? It's not like he'd be stepping out of the DMZ or something. This is not The Wire, despite how many actual Baltimoreans seem to believe that.

If the man wants to cut loose and have some drinks, get OUT of the harbor. Go to Fells, go to Canton, go to Fed Hill (watch out for d-bags, though), go to Hampden, go to Station North. Go experience some interesting Baltimore places.

At this point, I think we'll try to hit up a bar or two in both Federal Hill and Fells. With the proximity of both to the park, it sounds very doable.

I'd recommend Woodberry Kitchen. You'll need a car to get there, but worth the trip. Great food with a nice wine list and far less expensive than Chinghiale and Charleston.

Thanks! That looks like a nice place.

I suppose I should ask about crabs... being in Baltimore and all. What's the place "you have to go to" for crabs?

I dont know about their crabs, but for seafood I highly recommend Mama's on a Halfshell in Canton. The muscles there are out of this world.

This. It's not that it's the DMZ, but there's no reason to put yourself at risk and I didn't say don't GO to those areas, I said I wouldn't walk to them. Those areas are all fine once you're there.

Lexington Market is scary at Noon on a sunny day :-). I almost hit people driving through that area all throughout the day because they wonder the streets with no regards for the cars.

You have no idea the tidal wave of opinions/rant/flamewar you have just begun :)

I'll start off by saying you want to bring a bushel to my house and I'll steam them properly. Everyone else's way is either wrong or subpar!

And my grandmother makes the best crab cakes, Tilghman Island FTW!!!

Note: I live 90 minutes from the city so do not actually come to my house.

The casino would be nice if you like that but I don't think it is supposed to open till late August or September.

For something different really good Afghan food. Owned by Qayum Karzai, the elder brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai. (Qayum Karzai is now running to replace his brother in April elections.)

This place is open 24 hours weekends in Fells Point. Quirky,I think a little overrated but the Captain Crunch French Toast is different and has a Baltimore vibe, I know they are opening a location in Federal Hill ,nut not until around August 10th. Even on that Diners.Drive-Ins and Dives show. Even though most of those places are just ok.

Hotel:

Four seasons Harbor East

Food:

Ouzo Bay

G & M -- For Crab Cakes only.

We do pretty well, but I'm probably not going to stay at Four Seasons. I get stingy at some point. Plus, see we have gobs of Hilton points, so that will be our likely destination. Still, I appreciate your comment! And I'll keep those restaurants in mind!

So, you're saying I can't come to your house, but grandma's is wide open? You tell me the best time, and I'll bring the vino. ;)

Thank you!

Are casinos a new thing popping up in Baltimore?

They're all over the damn place in St. Louis now. It's really been a newer thing over the last 10 years of so. But I will say... they are pretty darn nice.

I would second the recommendation of The Helmand. The baby pumpkin appetizer is fantastic.

Maryland, generally. Maryland Live, just down the road (and also built by Cordish), is a nice casino that is generally packed.

Tilghman Island is 90 minutes from Baltimore yet a world away. Grandma is 94 and has been cooking bacon, crab cakes, and oysters in the same cast iron skillet since before the Oriole's escaped from St. Louis.

Now I'm going to hankering for crab cakes until the first catch comes out of the Choptank...

And the Orange Crush's there will put you and your wife right where you want to be. Mama's on the Half Shell was my favorite spot in Canton back when I lived there from 2001 to 2006.

    • I thought Chisholm missed home too. They didn’t appeal tho I don’t think.
    • Now run scores and Yanks take lead.
    • Inexcusable missed call in NY. Review Cleo at showed Chisholm out at 2nd. They upheld safe call.
    • Well, good on posters who proved the SSS side of "Guards Ball." I just found it striking in terms of the narrative in that article, which was basically the same as what most around here were complaining the O's lacked: clutch hitting, passing the baton, aggressive running, getting runners in from third, etc. I guess the real bottom line is "whatever works." Which of course varies from case to case. The old Bill James postseason wisdom was that HRs are the ticket, since you face good pitching and get so few hits. So back to you, Elias, keep crunching those numbers...
    • First, the had a jump in 23’ given how terrible they had been previously, which conditions many fans in the marketplace not to care. They simple weren’t relevant for years. So one very good regular season will not undue years of being bad/irrelevant and treating your customers terribly. Next, I think they missed an opportunity in the offseason by not doing enough by way of big/bold attention grabbing moves. Now I acknowledge that this was most likely due to the ownership flux/transition. I believe they got an attendance/marketplace engagement boost when they changed owners and when they traded for Burnes. However, I believe we would have seen more engagement attendance with say a big Gunnar extension and/or bringing in a big time FA.   IMO this would have created more buzz before the season (say around the time people make season tix decisions - IMO before Christmas is when some people make those bigger purchases). All of this is to say, that it will take time and effort on the organizations part because of how bad of a stain that the Angeloses left. I still have friends and colleagues who refuse to support the Orioles and attend games due to the damage that was done. Rubenstien & co are not going to be able to undo 30 years of awfulness overnight. But IMO it is not enough to simply call it “a new chapter”. They have to make new/different actions to distinguish themselves from who the Orioles were/used to be under the Angelos regime.
    • Just checking in on Gameday, Yankees looking incredibly vulnerable.  Should be the Os out there.  Super lame.  Whichever team wins this series I hope gets knocked out by CLE or DET.
    • If the franchise were better, the fan base would be too.  It’s been a rough 40 years.
