What I don't get is shouldn't the team have a compliance specialist who is on top of this stuff. Someone who at the beginning of the year goes to each player and says, "I see you had a TUE last year for X, we need you to see a doctor so we can prepare the paperwork for that exemption again."

Someone who has a lot of independence so players are comfortable going to them and saying, "hey I was thinking of taking this, how can I do that legally."

Yeah, if they don't do that they should. Apparently Davis didn't even apply this year. Don't know if that's confirmed or not. If true, I'd be very interested in finding out why he decided not to.

I'm not sure how much digging people want to do into just how these exemptions are granted. The NFL doesn't even publish the number of exemptions they give out. I'm guessing the number and the reason may be shocking. :scratchchinhmm:

This. I didn't know people would be so shattered to lose a replacement level player. Davis hasn't helped the team this year, we aren't losing much, if anything.

That is just flat out wrong IMO

He has struggled for sure but he has had numerous big hits or HR's. Most of the hits/HR he has have come during meaningful times and not in garbage time when the team is way down or up.

Not irreplaceable for sure but to say he has not helped the team with his bat and glove this year despite having a disappointing year is just not accurate

It would seem to me that a team should be notified by MLB that a player on their team has an exemption to a banned substance due to medical need. To keep it private (HIPPA), the team does not have to know what the substance is or what it is for.

Likewise, the team and player should be notified when the exemption terminates and the need to reapply if necessary.

Just a dumb, dumb move by Davis.

Why waste the option Roy?

The kid was not tearing up AAA. You have MLB ready options on the roster even if they are not the best players. I am not surprised at all. If the O's do not think he is ready from a scouting perspective this does not change that at all.

Not just that, he was batting .243/.302/.402 in August and with 29.3% strike outs. Dude might be a reasonable 1B one day, but he was free swinging right into September trying to put it together.

I don't have the time or inclination to do so...just going on my impression and memory of when they have occurred.

I have watched every game except two or three, just do not recall many of those HR's happening in blowouts or when we were down big (not all that often this year)

If you have that evidence or know were it is that proves otherwise, I will gladly admit my impression is wrong. But no its not a statement of fact just my impression.

I shudder to think what the reactions to this news would've been like if Davis' 2013 had been his 2014.

Regardless, 3B is once again a pain in the --- for the O's to fill. Yet another reminder for anyone who's advocated shifting Manny to short (when healthy). Hopefully hot corner musical chairs doesn't bite the O's too hard in October.

No Wieters, no Machado, and no Davis (who's arguably been missing in action all season), but a double-digit division lead. Strange days, man. Strange days.

Now is not his time, if we had no other options then I get it but he needs more seasoning

WAR right around 0. A .700 OPS is terrible for a 1B and his 3B defense is bad. His season has been nothing short of awful.

If you read that someone else (say, an older fan, for example...) was arguing from "memory" rather than easily-researchable/reviewable facts, what would your reaction be?

    • I always compare where we are in attendance to payroll. As it stands our attendance will be 19th in the league and payroll 22nd. The Twins are at 19th with 130 million dollar payroll which is 22 million higher than ours. I expect the Nats and Tigers to spend a little this offseason so that 130 million mark for 19th place may move closer to 140. Still gives this team 50-60 million to spend on either resigning guys or free agents.
    • Well, the changes to the flex plans this year led both me ($1200 plan) and my friend ($2500 plan) to not renew for next year. The decision to more severely limit playoff presale access and dramatically reduce the discount on food and drinks at the park just didn’t make it worth it to tie up that much money in advance. So, we’ll likely go to far fewer games next year. Given the press reports and online reaction, I have to think we weren’t alone in our decision making.
    • Rivera and Soto are hitting.   Holliday and Mayo are not.
    • Holliday could fill the role of pinch runner that Mateo would fill.
    • Yeah. I don’t get that either. SEA would win head to head tie with HOU and push HOU into WC race but it’s irrelevant if the loses don’t match.
    • Regardless of how down I've been about their recent play, there's always been some hope. Getting some guys back in time for the post season will definitely help.    The way this team has been built requires a group effort. I mean,  Gunnar is a huge star, but the lineup when healthy can be competitive top to bottom. I'm not knocking NY here, but if you can eliminate Judge(almost impossible), you stand a chance vs them. I'm not implying that they will go on a deep run because we've seen how bad it can be, but simply saying that getting healthy and having a shot is the best we as fans could have hoped for with the way this season has gone.
    • So who goes when Westburg and Urias come back?   My first cut is Jimenez.   The second is harder.    Liv Soto is the backup SS so I keep him.     Rivera is a good back up at 1B.   He is out of options.   Then there are  Holliday and Mayo.   Both have options. What's a GM to do?
