J.J. Hardy would like to stay, but 'everything changes' in free agency

Of course Roch reported this once too. And we know that was far from true.

Brooks Robinson apparently fine after falling at event

By Roch Kubatko, January 27, 2012 10:26 PM |

Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson fell off a stage tonight at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood Fla., where he was attending the Joe D Legends Classic. I'm told that he was coherent as paramedics transported him to a local hospital as a precaution. The fall was unrelated to Robinson's previous health issues. Robinson, 74, tumbled as he stood up

It was actually Brady that met with him.

This is a lot of nonsense. No one knows the specifics of talks. I'll l say it again. I have every reason to think DD has done his due diligence with respect to a Hardy extension and zero reason to believe he has not. I'm sure Hardy is a great guy in addition to being a fine player, but his comments mean almost nothing.

Brady met with J.J. 's agent. He must have casually mentioned Jhonny Peralta to Mr. Anderson in that casual informal discussion that really went nowhere. Or not. Maybe J.J. wants to play for 12 a year.
Well we know what happened when Scott Boras casually mentioned Joe Mauer to Dan Duquette.

Those two situations would not be comparable. Joe Mauer, when he signed his deal, was a much more valuable player than Matt Wieters ever has been or will be, so for Boras to have used that as a starting point (if he did) was a signal that there was no point in negotiating. Jhonny Peralta, however, is a very reasonable comp for JJ. There are arguments why JJ should get less, but his value is in the same general ballpark. Not so with Wieters and Mauer (at the time Mauer's deal was done), and if anything, Mauer's subsequent injury issues made it all the more absurd that the O's would ever consider giving Wieters a remotely comparable deal.

Very good points. There is a reason you do well at the law.

Among Hardy, Markakis, and Cruz, Cruz is the only one who needs to be signed. The lack of power on the free agent market will push up the price of power on the trade market. If Cruz walks and Davis can't be counted on, we're screwed. The only aspect of Nick's game that will be hard to replace is his arm. As for Hardy, they may not replace him entirely, but we can win without him. We can't win without a cleanup hitter.

Give JJ a QO. Cut Nick loose. Sign Cruz.

The only one of these three that you really can keep is Nick. And I don't see that happening either. I mean, we could have kept J.J. I guess we did not like the risk involved.

Is the fact that we know it was Brady and Tripp that met with the agent nonsense? Or something else.

In DD I trust.

JJ Hardy will be turning 33 next season and I think DD wants to keep this team young. Let the Yankees continue to do business as usual with overpriced broke down older players. While the Orioles go out and either get the next JJ Hardy or third baseman of the future, and take the draft pick that the Yankees give up.

I hope so... watching Hardy is starting to make my back hurt. I think he still looks like it's bothering him

Methinks your heart assumes too much.

I've predicted that Hardy is gone ever since Roch reported that Duquette has yet to approach JJ about an extension. I still hope I'm wrong. But the evidence continues to support that he's being given the Roberts and Reynolds treatment.

I am afraid you're right. But I sure hope you are wrong.

While it is literally true that Hardy "will be turning 33 next season," let's be clear: he will be 32 for most of the season, and that is considered his "baseball age" for next year.

One thing we know for sure is that DD is sharp and on top of this. We could (and most likely will) let some of these guys walk in the next couple years get a few nice high comp picks retool the ranks and replace the value. Sure we may lose some net defense or offense either way you go, but I really think we're missing the idea that Manny can most likely be an equal or better SS at some point. I think of the 5 guys up for FA in the next two offseasons we only bring back 3. My guess Davis, Cruz and Markakis.

I don't believe he can with his knees. I think he is better where he is. I hope they

resign JJ but I do have my doubts. But you are right. DD is on

top of things.

32-33 player, playing demanding defensive position. Has history of getting cortisone shots in shoulder and back over the last 2-3 years. Having below average offensive season compared to prior 4 years. Sounds risky.

A shortstop who always tosses to second rather than the long throw when he can. He has a good arm. It just hurts him to use it.

There's some risk, I don't deny it. Still, the guy has been far above average each of the last four years. For me, that's a risk worth taking, so long as the dollar value of the contract has a sufficient discount from current value (he's been worth about $17 mm/yr per fangraphs) to warrant taking the risk.

I might add that I would feel otherwise if we weren't a serious contender. I am not anxious to break up a winning formula.

    • I thought Chisholm missed home too. They didn’t appeal tho I don’t think.
    • Now run scores and Yanks take lead.
    • Inexcusable missed call in NY. Review Cleo at showed Chisholm out at 2nd. They upheld safe call.
    • Well, good on posters who proved the SSS side of "Guards Ball." I just found it striking in terms of the narrative in that article, which was basically the same as what most around here were complaining the O's lacked: clutch hitting, passing the baton, aggressive running, getting runners in from third, etc. I guess the real bottom line is "whatever works." Which of course varies from case to case. The old Bill James postseason wisdom was that HRs are the ticket, since you face good pitching and get so few hits. So back to you, Elias, keep crunching those numbers...
    • First, the had a jump in 23’ given how terrible they had been previously, which conditions many fans in the marketplace not to care. They simple weren’t relevant for years. So one very good regular season will not undue years of being bad/irrelevant and treating your customers terribly. Next, I think they missed an opportunity in the offseason by not doing enough by way of big/bold attention grabbing moves. Now I acknowledge that this was most likely due to the ownership flux/transition. I believe they got an attendance/marketplace engagement boost when they changed owners and when they traded for Burnes. However, I believe we would have seen more engagement attendance with say a big Gunnar extension and/or bringing in a big time FA.   IMO this would have created more buzz before the season (say around the time people make season tix decisions - IMO before Christmas is when some people make those bigger purchases). All of this is to say, that it will take time and effort on the organizations part because of how bad of a stain that the Angeloses left. I still have friends and colleagues who refuse to support the Orioles and attend games due to the damage that was done. Rubenstien & co are not going to be able to undo 30 years of awfulness overnight. But IMO it is not enough to simply call it “a new chapter”. They have to make new/different actions to distinguish themselves from who the Orioles were/used to be under the Angelos regime.
    • Just checking in on Gameday, Yankees looking incredibly vulnerable.  Should be the Os out there.  Super lame.  Whichever team wins this series I hope gets knocked out by CLE or DET.
    • If the franchise were better, the fan base would be too.  It’s been a rough 40 years.
