Orioles interested in Seth Smith

Aren't we passed signing/trading for players like this? Wasn't that the whole point of winning...and make it more appealing to play in Baltimore. So we didn't have to settle for the Seth Smith's of the world? And as I asked before, who exactly is he an upgrade over? Pearce? No. De Aza? Probably not. Lough? Maybe.[/

As long as Duquette and Showalter are here we will never be past getting players who outperform their cost. The Orioles have become a very efficient organization over the past three years and that will continue.

Vs RHP, with career averages:

1) LF De Aza .274/.335/.413

2) RF Pearce .270/.317/.383 --> maybe Lough gets some time here

3) DH Smith .277/.358/.481

4) CF Jones .283/.319/.476

5) 1B Davis .263/.338/.513

6) 3B Machado .279/.315/.438

7) C Wieters .248/.312/.397

8) SS Hardy .260/.305/.410

9) 2B Schoop .214/.241/.389

This is of course contingent on Wieters catching. Of note, RHs Jones, Machado and Schoop all have good splits vs RHP.

Don't think the Orioles are a match then.

I'm sure the Padres could use a starting pitcher.

Matusz and a prospect, I suppose, for Seth Smith. Big deal. The Rays and the Nats get the big deal with the Padres and we get to play on the little rides.

Nats get better? Rays?

Trea Turner will be an impact shortstop (I have liked him since seeing him at NC State) and I like the pitching prospect Joe Ross that they got back. Rays get Souza who will be a better replacement for Joyce, a catcher, Rene Rivera who is good defensively along with Bauer, Burch Smith, Travis Ott. I think both Rays and Nats are better.

I think that is quite questionable. Some scouts think Trea will never hit. The Rays lost a catcher, a bat, and outfielder, both teams may get better in the future because of this. And I do like Souza. But neither are better today.

Souza was not going to play for the Nats and they get a good shortstop prospect of which they have none in their system and two pitching prospects. Nats are better off.

Ok. I'll buy that. But should they have an injury, which Harper is apt to do, Souza would have been more valuable now.

    • People are being a bit ridiculous with the holier than thou takes criticizing a little humor. I am not saying what happened couldn’t cause a significant concussion, but it would be a bit of a fluke if it did. Mullins barely hit him with the bat and he had a helmet on. The fact that it was in the back of the head did make him more vulnerable, but this wasn’t the type of thing you see and think he was lucky to be alive.  Guys have probably hit their heads harder on the top of the dugout or on the fence making catches.  And note this comes from someone whose son has suffered severe concussions and who is well aware of the dangers associated with them. In short, people need to lighten up a bit on guys like Roy.  It was a little gallows humor.
    • Yeah, you read that wrong. LA2 is one of my favorite posters here and he knows it. No harm, no foul. If you aren't familiar with the game threads, it doesn't matter what the team is doing, people complain about it and people did make that same joke in the game thread long before Roy said it here. Game thread in summary - when the O's are not doing well, it's insufferable, when they are doing well, it's mildly less insufferable. There, that wasn't hard. I'd appreciate it if you didn't assume I'm throwing shade at people. I'll leave that up to you to do, you're really good at it.
    • Comp a. Like Gunnar, and beavers…
    • Wasn't Westburg a 2nd round draft pick?  It's a little early to judge last year's draft.
    • Before Elias.  They generally haven’t missed on a 1st round or 1st round comp pick with the position players.   I trust they’ll make a good decision at #22 and #32.   Their track record in rounds 2-4, particularly on college position players and specifically the last three drafts is suspect.
    • Anyone want to guess what it would take to get Crochet from the White Sox?  We could send SG over to ask politely and remind them of what they missed out on Ortiz.  I'm sure that wouldn't stir up a hornet's nest.
