If, IF, if Ubaldo continues to dominate?

I'm certainly rooting for him. For the life of me, I'll never understand the outrage by some people over how he performed last year. It's only been a year with Ubaldo and he clearly still has it in him to pitch well assuming he can get his mechanics under control.

Sometimes you dip into the FA market and you get burned (see Zito, Barry). When it's all said and done, I don't think this contract will look all that bad and there's even still a chance we could get surplus value.

I sure hope you folks aren't jinxing Ubaldo by being so optimistic over grapefruit game improvement. I prefer to wait until he faces a full fledged major league lineup in games that actually count before I become a believer!!

I think that's fair, especially the part about "games that count." But for the record, the lineup Ubaldo faced today was mostly major leaguers:

Jordan Schafer

Joe Mauer

Brian Dozier

Torii Hunter

Eddie Rosario

Kurt Suzuki

Eduardo Escobar

Josmil Pinto

Eduardo Nunez

Not exactly murderers' row, but according to what I can tell, all but Rosario are likely to be on the OD roster.

I also don't quite understand the outrage. If he were some sort of prima donna or jerk, malingering, complaining, laying back and feeling sorry for himself, then I would understand. But Ubaldo is doing everything that the coaches tell him to do. He was quoted earlier this spring about what people think of him.
For me, I can’t control what people are thinking. The only thing I can control is doing my job every day and work every day and hopefully take everything down to the game.
Some of these people don't realize that talent is 5% inspiration and 95% perspiration. I have faith that he'll get there.

To me, I think it's clearly time to acknowledge that Ubaldo will not go to the bullpen or come down with a mysterious injury. He's going to get his shot in the rotation to start the season - period.

Here are the Orioles' options, barring injury:

1. Move one of Gonzalez or Norris to the 'pen.

2. Option Gausman or Gonzalez.

3. Trade Gonzalez, Norris, or Ubaldo.

4. Do that crazy Dan/Buck thing where you tinker with off days and somehow have all 6 guys pitch until you absolutely, positively are forced to make some kind of tough decision.

Which way do they go? Which way do you go? And remember, Ubaldo to the bullpen is not your answer because that won't happen.

Why do you say that? Because he is a managing a weak Pirates lineup?

I think RIGHT NOW you would be correct. Norris to the pen or DL in short term. But Bud will return, then we will see if everyone is healthy. We all know injuries happen, it is good to have insurance.

I am just not very confident in Ubaldo, but hey, every other year right?

No one is confident in Ubaldo. I'm just telling you what will happen, and it involves Ubaldo getting a shot in the rotation. They're not going to NOT give him his 1 shot.

And for the record, he's pitched well his last 3 games, not that that matters.

Per the other thread I got bullied in, you aren't allowed to post opinions, just facts. Sorry. You must delete your thread without supporting documentation:)

I mentioned two starts ago when his start was televised that it was the best I had ever seen him. He's throwing strikes. Wallace and Chiti have done a wonderful job with him. Apparently even improved his time to the plate too! Jimenez will be in the rotation. The question is who will not be. Gausman to Norfolk is what I said yesterday. Sticking to it. They are not going to bounce Norris from the rotation based on ST, IMO.

Unless Norris isn't 100% and then a trip to the DL, I can see happening.

This also seems right from a Gausman developmental standpoint. I concur.

    • Yeah, I agree something like this might happen some day, but only if the union comes around to believing MLB is on shaky financial footing -- if and when that ever happens. I don't like the idea of voiding a players' contract then and there, but perhaps performing below a certain level would trigger some contract years in the future to automatically become option years.  Something along those lines. It's hard to imagine deals like this today, except possibly here and there for players who are known to be very inconsistent.  As long as baseball is considered financially healthy I'm sure the union would push back strongly against deals like this, especially in large numbers.
    • Thank you. I knew there was something bogus about that post. I saw Cal play SS. And Gunnar is no Cal at SS. Not even close. And this is coming from a big fan of Gunnar. I would like to see him play a traditional power position. Call me old fashioned. He’s hurting the team at SS.
    • Interesting.  We live in a data obsessed world now but it's not the answer to everything.  There should be a mix.
    • Tobias Myers for the brewers tonight: 6 innings 4H -1ER 1BB 11 Ks. not bad at all!
    • I doubt solid MLB pitchers can be acquired just by trading position players the vast majority of the time.  Look at how we acquired Bradish and Povich -- by trading solid (at the time anyway) MLB level pitchers.  In those trades we were on the other end, but we forced teams to trade good young pitchers for Bundy and Lopez respectively.  Now we did acquire McDermott and Seth Johnson by trading Trey Mancini.  So it does happen that pitching can sometimes be acquired trading only a position player, but Mancini had had a strong major league career to that point.  My point is I don't think you can expect to acquire pitching only by trading position players -- but if you can it may need to be a strong veteran that is not easy to part with. Perhaps we could acquire Tarik Skubal for just Jackson Holliday -- or Holliday plus one or two other strong position prospects.  But that would be a whole other level of a blockbuster trade. Also, I'm not sure how we can say the system is bereft of homegrown minor league pitching talent and then complain that we traded Baumeister and Chace -- two homegrown minor league pitchers that everyone here seems to agree are talented.  We can criticize the trade, but clearly there was and probably still are some desirable arms in the system that we'd rather not trade.  No, none of the ones Elias drafted have made it to the bigs yet, but maybe those two would have been among the first.
    • Seth Johnson on the Phillies' "philosophy": Orioles are data driven, Phillies are more "old school". I don't get much out of this but it's a data point. https://www.nbcsportsphiladelphia.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/seth-johnson-mlb-debut-phillies-orioles-trade/613582/ “I think the big thing is that Baltimore is very data-based,” he said. “Here’s a nice blend of the numbers and baseball strategy. Kind of old school. And I’ve been really enjoying it so far. For me, it’s kind of simplified everything. Concentrating on basic concepts like moving the fastball around. Not worrying about pitch shapes all the time. Just going out here and trying to pitch.”
    • If we have room, why wouldn't we add Pham and Van Loon just to have available depth in AAA (whether or not they are at risk of being taken)?
