UMD vs Miami!

Recommended Posts

i can't even begin to describe how upsetting it is to see them play like this...and the worst part is, you know Miami is going to come out and use every bit of the 35 seconds they have on every time down the floor. UMD might be down too much for this kind of game

Gotta think that with the way they've been playing these past few weeks that they can come out and still do something, but if they play the first 5 minutes of the 2nd half the way they played the first half I'll say chances are going to be quite slim. Hopefully Gary chews them a new one during halftime.

So when Dwayne Wade got injured on a reach in, should the other guy have been suspended?

right, because a reach in foul is exactly the same thing as an intentionally hard foul

I'm not commenting at all on the Graham foul, I'm listening to the game not watching, just saying that if you foul somebody hard intentionally, and they get hurt, you deserve the suspension. Even if the same exact foul with no injury to the player would not deserve a suspension.

And why do we seem to bench Mike Jones so frequently? Was he playing shoddy defense again?

There was no reason why Jones should have ever stepped off the floor. He was the only one putting the ball in the basket. Then Gary has the nerve to keep him on the bench for Brown when they go to a zone. As badly as this team is playing Gary is coaching just as bad. Team isn't ready to play, don't know how to beat a zone, and isn't putting the right players on the court to beat the zone.

You are right but if Graham hits the game winning shot in this game, many of you will be pissed he is still playing, when he clearly shouldn't be(at least if you think Henderson shouldn't be playing)

I doubt that's true - and it's not really much of a connection to the game at hand. It wasn't a similar play. It wasn't a similar situation. It wasn't a similar result.

That's all I'll say about that. Now, back to the game: can someone explain why Jones spends such long periods of time on the bench when it's painfully obvious that we really only score when he's IN the game?

Now, this isn't two years ago - so the line of argument that he "plays terrible defense" isn't quite right. And, further, Vasquez and Strawberry were playing horrific defense, themself. It makes no sense. We can score in bunches when he extends the defense. When, instead, we have Vasquez and Strawberry as our only perimeter threat, well...we're never going to get ANYTHING going on the low blocks.

For the record, it was a fast break, and while a hard foul, it was clearly Graham going for the block while using his body.. It's the same play you see all the time. Ibekwe hit the floor hard and nothing came of it at all. It was a hard foul but nothing dirty at all. No flying elbows or anything...Completely different from Sunday. A regular hard foul in a game, it would never even have come up had it not been for this past Sunday.

I know I'm going to be yelled at for discussing this, but....

That's entirely the point. A reckless foul is a reckless foul. If a guy lands wrong and ends up slightly bloody, it shouldn't make a damned dfference in the officiating. For the same reason, regular fouls should be officiated consistently, regardless of the players' reactions.

Obviously, that's not what happens, which just makes me more angry every time I see a soccer player draw a red card, go out on a stretcher, and then come back 2 minutes later.

In the NBA, Kobe got the same suspension when his elbow hurt Ginobli as he did when it didn't hurt anyone. That's how officiating for hard fouls should work.

Now, you can still debate whether or not what happened was a reckless foul in the first place. In my opinion, he wasn't even close to the ball and just hit Ebekwe when he was running full speed.

Just as I figured. Jones destroys zones. And there he was, idling away on the bench. But at least Dave Neal and Parrish Brown got minutes. Our offense ONLY works when Jones is a threat. But apparently Gary thinks he can win on defense and intensity alone.

This isn't a knock on the job he's done this year, btw. I just hope his theory is that as long as we're within striking distance we're fine.

Free-throw shooting.

Rebounding.

Defense.

Shooting.

Turnovers.

All below par this game. Guess Gist's PS2/XBOX/whatever WAS a lucky charm.

If you shoot someone in the chest, and he doesn't die, are you going to be charged with murder?

    • I’m going to preface this by saying (1) I expect to get crushed for bringing it up and (2) it shouldn’t impact trade deadline strategy.     I think Felix is going to pitch in the playoffs. There is nothing I have to go on other than gut feeling, in fact Elias has clearly stated otherwise. But I think that is what he is shooting for. I bring it up only on the premise of having a guy in the bullpen who could miss bats.  They could have him be a situational guy and leave Kimbrel where he is for this season.
    • For Norfolk, Cook has started 29 games at 1B with a .996 fpct. and 5 games each at LF, CF, RF.   He started one game at 3B and made an error and at lower levels played a decent amount of 2B.   I think he’s probably an emergency/last resort guy at 2B/3B and @Tony-OH seems skeptical of his outfield defense in general.  Saying all that, with a LH heavy hitting OF he has a decent shot as soon as next year, especially if Norby gets moved.  Norby, with the ability to play LF/RF/2B would probably be his chief competitor for a backup role.  Also depends on what they do with Hays.
    • Your definition of what we need and @Bemorewins definiton of what we need may be different.    Getting a #3 starter he feels confident as a game #3 starter in the playoffs.   Who, in his mind, is that pitcher?   Fedde will not require one of those guys.  Crochet might.
    • We do not have to give up Holliday, Basallo, or Mayo to get what we need.
    • So you think Elias will give up one of the top 3 prospects to get upgrades?
    • “Dramatics”? That’s an interesting way of framing my opinion. I promise you I am as calm and cool as a cucumber. There’s no “dramatics” going on here. As you know, numbers fluctuate during any given period of time in the season. Good/great players have bad/cold stretches and bad/terrible players have good stretches. IMO we do not possess the type of top end talent at the back end of the bullpen needed to win multiple rounds against the best opposition in October.  If you are confident in Cano/Kimbrel or worse in Vespi/Baker/Perez/etc getting Soto and Judge out in a big spot late in the game in Yankee stadium in October, that is fine. I am not.  Just as an observer of baseball, Holmes is a much better pitcher than any reliever that we have. I would be much more confident in his talent than any reliever that we have. Now if we had Felix that would be one thing. But this season we do not. And I would hate for a team as good as ours to be held back by not making the needed/necessary move(s) before we get into October.  IMO we did that last season (with the starting pitching) and it didn’t end well. And I acknowledge that everybody doesn’t think like me nor have the same championship expectations/aspirations. Some fans/posters here have stated as much and that they are happy if we have a winning team year after year or if we just make it into the tournament year after year, regardless of results when we get there. And that’s fine. That’s just not my desired outcome. The great thing about this board is that we don’t have to agree and are able to express our opinions.
    • That’s right. Great times are here and more ahead with this group.
