What is wrong with Bud Norris?

Norris can't go to the DL if he's not injured. But he can go to the bullpen and work in long relief until he shows improved command.

Let's challenge Gausman by putting him in the rotation and see what he does--he can't be worse than Bud Norris has been. If Gausman flops, send him to Norfolk and give Mike Wright or Tyler Wilson a try.

Releasing Bud would be a panic move, but I don't think moving him to the bullpen is a panic move at this point. He was terrible in spring training as well. Letting him make more starts while his command is this bad is just throwing away ballgames.

Good post. I think it would also be helpful to have a legit long man in the bullpen. Whether or not KG moves to the rotation, Buck seems to want to use him in the pen more like Miller last year, as a 1+ inning bridge guy in close games. Garcia can be used in blowouts but only for an inning or two at a time. We really don't have a TJ type who can come in and pitch 3-4 innings when our starter gets shelled. TJ pitched 2.1+ innings seven times last year (plus Ubaldo did it once). Bud could play that role for a while til he gets straight.

Gausman hasn't shown anything so far that he would be helpful in the rotation right now. Give me Mike Wright on Sunday for 500 Trabek.

I think Bud would be more valuable in the pen but don't see the world ending if he gets another start or two - after that, I may be keeping my eye on the sky waiting for it to fall... Gausman seems all out of whack.. what exactly has happened??

He's been terrible but it's too soon to pull the plug on him. He'll get a few more starts at least.

I think so too. I did not think he was awful in his start against the Yankees. At that point I was thinking he was making some progress. Obviously, yesterday was a major setback. Another start like that next time out and I think they'd pull him from the rotation, but if he can manage to have at least a mediocre game (like the one vs. NY) I think he'll get a bit longer.

FYI.....Norris started the 2014 season 0-2, so I'm not ready to panic or throw him in the BP....... or on the scrap heap. The difference is that despite the 0-2 record last year, he definitely was pitching better than he has in his first two games this season.

Bud was roughed in Spring Training this year and it's carrying over into the season. I'd give Gausman the ball next time. I'm hoping to see KG next Saturday as I'm flying up to see them vs the Rays.

I'd like to see Gausman get moved out of the bullpen. Let the guy with a 95+ fastball actually start a game. They have too short of a leash on him. Let the guy pitch a few games in a row.

We're in a dogfight for 162 games and carrying dead weight, errr...I mean Rule V players is hard enough, but A-ball pitchers in the pen? Really Dan? You know who would make a good replacement for TJ McFarland on this team? TJ McFarland! Who coincidentally, we have already "paid" Rule V dues on and now is being under-utilized...it's like Mac is being double Rule Fived. OK, I think I hurt my head there...

    • 1:2 is good.  Elite is a player like Arraez who is 1+:1.
    • Was reading Wiggins write up on ESPN. He appears to be more of a home run threat than Koolaid. He had a pick 6 each of the last 2 years.
    • Starting point has changed.  Given the fact he has approx 1/7th of his season in the books at 1.139, to OPS just .780 for the season, he'd have to drop off to under .730 the rest of the way.  That sort of drop off wouldn't be acceptable to me. I'd like him to OPS .800 the rest of the way for roughly .850 for the season.  The more they use him in a platoon role, the better I think that number might be.
    • Can I ask how you timed it vs the DVR?  Did you use a stopwatch or count click with pause/FF, or something else?
    • I can’t fathom why anyone would want a Tanner Scott return. In 10 innings, he is 0-4 with a 1.78 whip. He was maddening before, and now he’s older. But I wonder if the Red Sox would part with Justin Slaten? He’s been pretty outstanding. Yeah, only 8 innings, but we hired Yohan Ramirez, and he’s been a catastrophe in 10. Yes, I know he’s a rule 5, and the Bosox are in the East. And their pitching is pretty thin, too. But they know they aren’t going anywhere in this division, and they might think getting a good return for a Free Rule 5 guy might be worthwhile.
    • This draft unfolded weirdly.  First with the *nix guys getting taken early and then how no defensive players got taken all draft, and then a bunch of teams reaching for OTs.  I'm pretty happy with how the draft unfolded because I think we got a player that I expected to be gone by the teens or early 20s.  I don't know what we're doing with our OL but hopefully we can maybe trade up from 62 to pick someone up.
