Huge Givens fan. I think he would have been here by now if Jordan wouldn't have made him a position player despite every other team scouting him as a pitcher. Joe Jordan was so awful...it pains me.

But on the positive-I really like this kid and his potential. He will be on the 40-man at some point this year. He won't get by another Rule 5 draft.

Here's the problem with this line of thinking: what are we saving him for, exactly? He's a free agent after this season. If he's the best option, then you call him up when a long term need arises, unless he is replacing some guy who is injured and will return after a short while. So, if we were cutting bait with Garcia, for example, Johnson would be a perfectly logical choice to take his spot. He's either good enough to hold it, or he gets exposed to waivers.

Yep and I just don't see where this awful pitching start let's us hold on to Garcia he's got to go IMHO.

The Orioles have been extremely fortunate in regard to their bullpen over the last few years.

I think that it is a testament to them (the bullpen) that the team managed to go 81-81 last year with such horrible results from the starting rotation.

There is a lot of truth to that. However Roe and McFarland weren't very good last year and Garcia was babyed/DL'd through the season. The top 5 or 6 guys were good to very good.

To me,the logical move would be promoting Drake, Johnson, or Wright from AAA and then send Givens to Norfolk and see how he does there.

I don't think you meant "fortunate" as "lucky" OFFNY, but I do have to give a whole lot of credit to Duquette for putting together good bullpens over the past few years. Granted 3 of those bullpen pitchers were failed prospects as far as what they were drafted for (Matusz, Britton and Givens), but to turn them into successful players elsewhere deserves credit.

I sort of look at bullpen pitching as the new market inefficiency that OBP was for the A's. With the exception of O'Day, in recent years we have filled our bullpen with relatively cheap guys and I hope we continue to do so down the line.
