Roch: Orioles Are Disappointed with Dariel Alvarez

I remember the MLB taking over before the bankruptcy.

Yes. The divorce tied assets up long enough that Frank had to get a loan to cover payroll. Anyway, I hope MLB doesn't intervene with the Orioles/Nationals. We all know how they would rule there.

That may not be the case.

His lack of disciple is so extreme that even if it works in AAA he does not possess the Vlad-like ability to make hard contact for him to be able to succeed in the majors.

It isn't just about doing well in the minors.

Fingers in ears. Nah nah nah. Can't hear you. Can't hear you.

Alvarez just hit a double in the 10th inning. He scored the winning run on a Urrutia single.

2 for 5 tonight makes him 29 for his last 77 (.377).

None of that matters . A walk is better than a hit. Don't you even know that?

Agreed, but let's keep in mind that his "AAA career" to date, consists of 408 AB's. He's hot right now. Let's see what his numbers are when the season's over. What kind of numbers puts in the running for a regular spot next year, in your opinion?
Since their won't be much competition, those numbers won't be very high.

Is OPS has been disappointing but the weather is starting to warm up. I don't get the part about being a CF. We have Jones. Our back up CF plays like 30 innings a year. He's actually cut down on his strikeouts from last year. Last year he had 27 in 183 PA's. This year he has 23 in 248 PA's. He's hitting into a ton of DP's (10). He's looking like a poor mans delmon young with better defense.

Yeah, don't get this thread. They may be disappointed because of the lack of walks but I was impressed with his range in RF tonight. Looked better than anyone we have except Jones or Lough defensively.

We have no idea what the financials show. None. We have no idea if MLB is not currently planing to invoke good of the game and take the franchise away. They have done it recently.

I think your a bit naive Weams! MASN is a real money maker for sure. Angellos is defending the deal he made. IMO he shouldn't have to, but I said letting the Nats in DC was a mistake that he should've fought hard against.

Taking his ownership away has about a zero chance. The Orioles are not in financial despair and I think that's a fight Angelos would find a way to win in court.

Strawman arguments aside, his career .282/.311/.419 line in AAA would be cause for disappointment if he was a 22 year old prospect, much less a 27 year old one.

Age is not as much a factor with Alvarez. Not with what he has been through. Escaping for Cuba. New culture. Its not like he has been stalled in the minors for years. He has progressed pretty fast. Now once he gets to the majors his career could be shorter in the number of years he is productive. Age waits for no man - well that is not on 'roids.

If his defense is as good as people say it is, being a league average hitter (~.730 OPS) would make him about a 1 WAR player which is alright. If he hit .310/.350/.450 in AAA over the whole year I would say he could be a second division starter (like Lough) in the majors.

Alvarez's hot streak came too late. The Orioles chose Reimold, who is off to a nice start. All Alvarez can do now is stay hot and wait to see if someone gets injured or falters. I don't see the Orioles making any more OF moves for a while.

    • I'm lost for words about why Rutschman struggled, other than as I've long said he's a catcher and you're not going to get a MOO monster bat playing 110 games behind the plate- but the overall outcome of the team was within what I thought was reasonable, if a bit on the low end. Regarding the depth, Holliday and Mayo are more talented than Urias, but if we had gotten rid of Urias, Mateo, and Mountcastle to hand them spots, this team would have been worse for it, and maybe not even make the playoffs. Urias is good.  Mountcastle is good.  They're not "everyday" players according to your definition, but we have exactly one of those guys.  That doesn't mean every one else is " not good." I wouldn't be surprised to see all three back next year.  I wouldn't be surprised if they moved on from 2-3 of them.  Though I think the former is far wiser than the latter, though it depends on a lot of other things.
    • My post is coming off the wrong way.  The OP I quoted seemed like you were “lost for words” about why the team struggled the way they did. All I’m saying is I think you are like that because you didn’t see the scenarios where this much of a drop off from last year was going to happen. And btw, the depth (to me at least) wasn’t a good thing.  Depth is good when the players are good. If not, they are just guys blocking better talent.
    • But we have no idea who told her or of the info is good. She has given no reason to believe her. Im sure someone told her something but im not sure she smart enough to be able to tell the difference between good info and bad info.
    • I'm a big fan.  It doesn't mean I have sources in the clubhouse. Do we have any idea who her sources are?  Does she have any kind of track record of having reliable sources?
    • I don't know who this woman is and I don't do Twitter. And this is what I touched on in the other thread: I don't know what the best path forward is b/c I don't know exactly what the problem is. I don't think Hyde needs to go, but if this is true- and I have no idea if it is or not- he should be gone. The talk of veteran leaders brings questions.  What was insufficient of the leadership of Satandaner, Mullins, Burnes, and Kimbrel?
    • Sig for me is notably rigorous trying to combat this.    I feel pretty sure he had a say in crafting his very geeky title, a reflection of his personal brand. We'll see how it goes here if it becomes recommending Adam Frazier and Kyle Gibson as correct for the roster once again.
