Hopefully today - 2/23 - is the day. It would be nice to get Fowler signed quick and early instead of waiting around until something ridiculous like the 24th of February like they did with Cruz. ;) Go Orioles

Well, there is an extra day of spring training with it being Leap Year and all.

There's the ugly blue FL logo.

That may up being the case by default, but I don't think one has anything to do with the other. It had been reported before that the O's would give up the pick for Fowler with or without Gallardo signing.

Did Sir Lion report this, he said DD was willing to give up the pick for Fowler, if Gallardo signed?

Well, that plan may need some adjusting now. If Hamilton is even more limited, the Rangers need to have a legitimate left-handed hitting option for the platoon to work. Or they need to scrape the platoon idea all together.

They could spend the spring taking a serious look at left-handed hitting prospect Nomar Mazara or right-handed hitter Lewis Brinson, but it doesn't sound like Joey Gallo will get the same opportunity.

----

The other option: Dive into the pile of still-available free agents. There are plenty, many with previous Rangers experience. The club has been in contact all winter with former Rangers David Murphy and Will Venable and Denton's Austin Jackson.

The issue is what the club's real need is.

----

If the Rangers have reasonable expectations that Hamilton can play, they have more need for a backup center fielder, which would take Murphy out of the mix. If Hamilton is expected to be out for a significant amount of time to start the season, Murphy makes all the sense in the world as part of the left-field platoon and would give Brinson and Mazara more time at Triple-A to fine-tune their games.

If Murphy were willing to take a minor league deal, he might be in camp within a day as a low-risk insurance policy. But the Rangers aren't willing to guarantee any major league spots -- unless absolutely forced to do so.
