Since coming over to the Orioles (and shaving his beard.. this cannot be overlooked!), Miley has been awful to the tune of a 9.53 (1.94/.359). He just had his best month in Seattle pitching to a 3.45 ERA in July to which the M's promptly responded by selling high immediately. Miranda hasn't been great for Seattle, but he's an all star compared to Miley. He has allowed 12 runs in he last 6 IP over two starts. If we go back to mid-June, the team Miley is pitching for has lost 9 of the last 11 games he has started. He was actually pretty good back in 2012 and 2013 for the D'Backs, but it's been all downhill since then. He has a decent ERA against the Nats in six starts, but his WHIP and ERA suggest he has gotten extremely lucky and he wasn't so lucky in his last start against them. His ERA is microscopic when pitching at Nationals Park, but the WHIP is still quite high with 31 base runners allowed in only 19.2 IP which, again, indicates he got real lucky. Everyone in the current Nationals lineup hits Miley really well except Jose Lobaton and Miley's RISP numbers are all above .300.

Yeah, Roark is really good. He has posted an ERA under three the last two months and in April. His highest ERA month was June at 3.56. Roark is a ground ball pitcher with a 244/227 ratio and since the beginning of June, the Nationals are 13-2 when Roark starts including a current 5-0 stretch. He has been walking people a little more recently, but it doesn't seem to be stopping him from winning games as he does a good job of limiting hits. He also doesn't give up a lot of home runs, but has given up four this month which ties the season high he set back in May. Roark made three appearances against the Orioles. One back in 2014 where he allowed five runs in 6.1 IP and the rest was last year allowing a total of four runs in 5.2 IP. His best start was last year where he gave up three runs in five innings.

The Orioles are able to take advantage of the rookie Lopez who really didn't look good at all in this one and get the first two games. Meanwhile, Gausman had maybe his best fastball since April as the Nats hitters just couldn't get around to it and kept hitting harmless popups. I think the review in the first inning on Turner's stolen base really set the tone for the game and the second one just added to that. Turner is a nice looking player with incredible speed, but Schoop put on a couple of incredible tags to get him. Everything had to be perfect to get him both times and it was and I can certainly see why challenges are needed to get him out on steals. I just love players like Turner even if it doesn't always work out because it's always an exciting play and always the potential for an error or a brilliant throw from the catcher and/or a brilliant play by the receiver at second to try to put the tag on in time. Anyway, big start for Gausman and big win for the Orioles heading on the road to Washington and then to New York.

Roark hasn't done well against the Orioles and Miley's numbers against the Nationals at first glance look very good, but it's not as good as it looks. Roark is miles better than Miley in every way and I'd still take him in this one easy despite his struggles against the Orioles.

okay, so Boston, Toronto, Detroit and KC all won today and Seattle is still playing the Yankees (on ESPN) while Houston loses their game. Depending on what happens to Seattle, I'll update the standings. The Orioles just can't seem to gain any ground even when they win and we have Toronto coming up next week for another big series. Seattle ultimately got shut down by Sabathia and the Yankees 5-1. The M's were only able to come up with four hits all night.
