Thanks for this post, and I really agree whole-heartedly.  I've had a number of debates with a buddy about this, who likes to lampoon Coolbaugh (and Presley before him) about our batters' impatience.  I think that, in general, way too much credit or blame is put upon a pitching or, especially, hitting coach for player performance.  In many cases, these guys just are who they are.

But Jonah Hill was able to convince David Justice to take more walks.

All the walks are not Castillo's problem. He calls good games, but he can't make the pitcher throw strikes.

For what it's worth, Stats Corner has Castillo at -3.8 framing runs (-0.98 strikes/game).   http://www.statcorner.com/CatcherReport.php.     BP has him at -0.9 framing runs.    http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=52461

I don't think any of that is a very significant factor in our pitchers' performance.

I think the biggest effect Mcdowell can make with our P's is with Bundy, Gausman and the young guys.  Tillman is established.  Miley got fixed by Mcgregor.  Ubaldo is a lost cause.  Brach, Britton and O'day are all vets.  It would be nice to see a guy like Chricton find his way under Mcdowell and Mills.
