Does anybody see them around anymore? When I was a little kid in Lutherville the 50's, we'd see them in the yard once in a while, but by the late 60's we didn't see them anymore. Whoever is in charge of bird names (maybe some MFY fans?) changed the name to "North American Oriole", and I think one big part of the reason was that they don't spend time near Baltimore anymore.

Actually according to this site, the Bullock's Oriole and the Baltimore Oriole were grouped together as the Nothern Oriole, but were recently separated again because the two species aren't closely related...

Interesting that Millar was the only former Red Sox player to show up. Obviously it was because the Orioles were going to be in Boston that night but there's something about fraternizing with the guys that you are going to be paid to beat two days before you play them that just seems wrong. I could see if a group of Oriole players went but this apparently was just Millar. I wonder how he got the invite...

It's interesting how Millar can just turn the switch on and off like that...

Ooops, I thought it was "North American Oriole". Anyway, glad to see that they put the "Baltimore Oriole" name back.

At the time they did away with it, I recall the article in The Sun saying that the migratory patterns had changed and that they weren't around much anymore. However, the map on the site you linked to shows that Baltimore is right on the edge of the zone they occupy in the summer.

If you wanna attract them...

These birds forage in trees and shrubs, also making short flights to catch insects. They mainly eat insects, berries and nectar, and are often seen sipping at hummingbird feeders. Oriole feeders contain essentially the same food as hummingbird feeders, but are designed for orioles, and are orange instead of red and have larger perches. The birds are also fond of halved oranges.

Also...

Male brightly colored with black hood, female duller and without black hood.
Sorry about that, blueberry ;-)
Young male Baltimore Orioles do not achieve adult plumage until the fall of their second year.

Yet another reason to not expect too much from AJ this year...

ps: Let's not tell Lou Dobbs about this part:

the Baltimore Oriole is most closely related to the Black-backed Oriole of Mexico

Well that does it! Millar intentially whacking that ball off his leg to leave us a player short shows without a doubt he is a mole planted by the Sox. Good work Boston, you have infiltrated our system! :laughlol:

Well OH, we can put this one to bed. With the flurry of offseason activity, it looks like our dear friend JTrea doesn't have to worry about Millar coming back to the Orioles.

Goodnight, sweet prince.

Moose if you start a Kevin Millar appreciation thread... :cussing:

Nah, but he's been doing work for MLBN and based on the fact that we look like we'll have Huff at 1st and Scott at DH, I don't think we'll be bringing back Mr. Millar.

Ah. I have seen him on MLBN, he is a natural in the studio, despite looking pretty uncomfortable in a suit and tie.
