I'm not willing to go to that extreme, but I do think they've placed financial restrictions on him. Just like I think Duquette was ordered to cut payroll last summer. It had much more to do with saving money then it did restocking the farm system.

Of course he has a total budget.  No one thinks total control means he isn't working under some type of budget.

Now does he have the right to allocate money as he wishes within that budget?  Certainly more than Dan did.

The Gausman trade always will be compared to the contemporaneous Archer trade, which brought Tampa Austin Meadows and Tyler Glasnow.    I argued that Archer was more valuable than Gausman and hence warranted a higher return, but some folks felt either that the two were equivalent or that we should have been able to pick up at least one Meadows/Glasnow level talent.    That’s the context in which the Gausman trade does not look like an A.    And of course, at the time nobody knew Gausman would fall apart this year.    Archer hadn’t exactly been lights out either (5.35 ERA in 20 starts).

I would say Jake Odorizzi would be a better comparison to Gausman and the Rays actually got back a pretty light return for Odorizzi when they traded him after the 2017 season as well. They only got back one player back in return, a 20 year old SS in High A ball named Jermaine Palacios. Maybe there just never was much of a market out there for pitchers like Odorizzi and Gausman.

I think he wishes to spend much less than you wish for him to be able to.

As long as the salary cap (whatever it is) doesn't hinder the growth of the franchise I have no problem with it. I want him to spend money on prospects and infrastructure. That's it. And no free agent deals, for the next few seasons, longer than one year.

Does anyone really miss Gausman?  At any time this season have any one of you been like "Damn, I wish we still had Gausman."

I know I haven't.  Even with Eshelman, Woj, etc.

And Hess, right?   You're a big fan of his I'm sure.    IF we had Gausman we might have missed all the excitement that was Dan Straily. :leaving:

Kevin Gausman put up a 2.87 ERA and a 3.78 FIP along with a 1.140 WHIP for the Braves in nearly 60 IP last year. He was 27 when traded and had put up reasonable numbers pitching in the AL East. I mean, he put up a 4.08 FIP (and a 4.18 ERA) pitching in the AL East up through 2017.

Ultimately, I think the package for Gausman was lackluster. It was a quantity vs. quality trade and I'm still bearish on any of those prospects really turning into anything for the O's. Even if it was a salary dump re: getting rid of O'Day's contract, I wish they would have actually gotten something more quality rather than warm bodies, because all of the other pieces from that trade deadline were pretty underwhelming minus the Machado deal.

I haven't been enamored with any of Duquette's deals aside from maybe 2012-2013. After that? Pretty meh.

Anyways, water under the bridge.

    • I agree with this. The unfortunate part of that is it typically takes leaving to figure that part out. Most of us lack that ability to “recognize what we have” and resist the other.   With all that being said, I’m not sure that concept necessarily applies here. He could certainly move on, get the bag, and land in a place with good people and good opportunity.
    • It’s more than just not being Angelos.    People see the resources this group has relative to the Angelos family.  The stage of life many in the group are in. There’s a lot of people around the city with connections to the ownership group and you hear a very consistent theme of what the group is looking to do.
    • Imagine the shame of that player, always having an asteroid attached to his achievement in the history books.
    • Can we implement some sort of paragraph policy around here?
    • I'll be honest, wasn't on my radar until this post. I went back and watched his outing and all of your observations are right on in my opinion. Lots of swing and miss and definitely not a195 pounds lol. Has had command problem in past but not this outing.  I'll see what I an dig up about him but would be nice to have velo.
    • He's top ten for me easy. The real question is whether he's the team's best pitching prospect or not? Povich has it right now due to his success in AAA, but nobody brings the stuff that DeLeon brings consistently in the system. He's a taller Cionel Perez with a changeup.
    • Ha, I know you love your boy!   He is improving but while he's "versatile" in that he has experience at a lot of positions, he's not really good at any of them. He reminds me a bit of Rick Short but shorty was a better hitter overall albeit with a little less power than Cook. I still think he's an org guy but he may at some point work his way into a major league bench one day. There are worse guys who played in the majors for sure.
