Villar plays balls-out on every play.  Yes, that leads to some mistakes due to his aggressiveness. He plays with much more passion than the previous Oriole players the past few years, so I'll take it.

So Villar has gotten his AVG up to .274 with a .350 OBP. That is really starting to get respectable for a guy hitting mostly lead off. He has and 893 OPS and 49/133 XBH/hits. And 27/35 steals.

Plus he should finish with his most HR (19) , and statistically his career best season.

He did make a foolish attempt to steal 3B with two out tonight.    That’s the kind of poor decision that fuels his reputation as a bonehead.

Yes. I like his aggressive approach on the base paths, but he’s prone to these kinds of mistakes. As Palmer noted, he’s fast enough to score from 2B with two outs on almost any ball hit to the OF. 

Also, it’s a gift to the catcher when anyone tries to steal 3B with a LHB up. With a LHB the catcher has a clear view of 3B. The few split seconds it takes to step in front of a RHB on an attempted steal of third is probably enough for Villar to be safe on that play.  

But again, with two outs (unless you have a pitcher who’s wild) there’s no good reason for the attempt.

It was definitely a mistake. You'd think an experience stealer like him would have learned by now.

He's been like this throughout his career - and he also makes more than his share of mistakes when playing SS.  He's a risk-taker, but he also just makes foolish plays too often to play for a lot of teams.
