I'm definitely curious how that will play out.  Ortiz doesn't seem to have the same stigma as Bonds or McGwire.  Depends on what the voters think.

Yeah, Smith getting is is a tough pill to swallow given the high benchmark that's been set for relief pitchers. Wilhelm, Fingers, Eckersley, Gossage, Sutter, Hoffman...and Smith? Just doesn't seem right.

He's also more likable. Don't underestimate that quality. Bonds and McGwire both rubbed the media wrongs at times during their career.

I have a feeling that it will be complely brushed aside because he's a popular media darling with (from an ESPN/Boston perspective) all of the intangibles it's possible to intangible.  I think it's surreal, but he's first ballot and Edgar will have to rely on a committee in 2035 that has Ichiro on it.

This is exactly what people predicted when the formation of this committee was announced. Bad move, although I have often felt that the Hall likes controversy. A couple of boring induction classes in a row reduces their visibility.

Me too. But the folks just don't care anymore. Heck, A-Rod may even get in first.
