HOF19

I interpreted this as Orioles hall of fame inductees when I first read this headline.

I know Lee Smith was just a reliever but his career WAR is 29!  Mariano Rivera is almost double at 56.

So WAR must be a non standard evaluation measure.

I had the same reaction. I also think this probably opens the door for Edgar Martinez to get elected too. In general I'm not sure how I feel about players who spent their entire careers as DHs getting int the Hall.

Considering David Ortiz is likely getting into the HOF, there better be a spot for Edgar Martinez waiting.

He didnt spend his whole career as DH, check his stats.

He has more OF games then he did DH games.

Point taken, but it doesn't look like he had more OF games than DH games. Unless I'm misreading this...

Yeah, Smith getting is is a tough pill to swallow given the high benchmark that's been set for relief pitchers. Wilhelm, Fingers, Eckersley, Gossage, Sutter, Hoffman...and Smith? Just doesn't seem right.

I'm definitely curious how that will play out.  Ortiz doesn't seem to have the same stigma as Bonds or McGwire.  Depends on what the voters think.

He's also more likable. Don't underestimate that quality. Bonds and McGwire both rubbed the media wrongs at times during their career.

It depends how they view Ortiz as a steroid abuser.

I have a feeling that it will be complely brushed aside because he's a popular media darling with (from an ESPN/Boston perspective) all of the intangibles it's possible to intangible.  I think it's surreal, but he's first ballot and Edgar will have to rely on a committee in 2035 that has Ichiro on it.

When I saw "Baines selected for Hall" on some newsfeed on my phone I assumed it was some kind of Onion satire.

Me too. But the folks just don't care anymore. Heck, A-Rod may even get in first.
