Darnell McDonald just came to mind. I remember him having a good deal of hype when I was growing up.

And wasn't he the losing pitcher in the game in Boston where Chris Davis was the winning pitcher?

Yep. And in a weird way he flashed that command his first couple years in the show. Looked like a very solid lefty finesse pitcher. Didn’t have great velo, but good enough, and could throw any of his 4 pitches at any time ?

All downhill after the oblique strain.

Billy Rowell for me. Tim Linecum was available and I had written up a report on him and provided it to my Area Scout when I was out in Hawaii. I said he was the best amateur pitcher I had ever seen personally and only Josh Beckett was better in my minor league scouting.

I respect the hell out of Joe Jordan, but missing on Lincecum for Rowell was painful.

What’s depressing about this thread is there’s 10 choices out of the last 16 no. 1 picks, and you could have gone back even further.     Then look at the six that weren’t included:

2003 Markakis

2005 Brandon Snyder - could have been included

2010 Machado

2015 Stewart - too soon to tell

2017 Hall - too soon to tell

2018 Rodriguez - too soon to tell.

Basically, you’ve got two guys who fully met expectations and a few others where we don’t know yet how they’ll turn out.
