Well, maybe, but the question isn’t whether his mistake pitches are getting hit but how many mistake pitches he’s throwing. Was he just lucky to start against bad teams that missed his mistakes? Or is he throwing more mistakes?

Thats what I don’t know: I’m not even sure where to look. Heat maps show where he’s throwing but not whether those were mistakes( meant to throw here, it ended up there)

Given the state of our rotation it’s a significant question.

He looked surprisingly good today - hitting 94 and 95 on his fastball late in the game and with really good command and control of his pitches.  And obviously going 7 innings was a significant plus.  Is he part of the O's future?  No, but it was nice to see a well-pitched game.

Yes, if the future includes next year!

Not according to GameDay. In the sixth (8 pitches), he threw four fastballs: 88mph, 89.7, 89.6 and 90. In the seventh (13 pitches), he threw five fastballs: 90.5, 90.7, 91.7, 90.1 and 90.8mph. He hit 92 a couple times earlier in the game, but was generally 89-91 the whole game peaking at 92 and bottoming out at 88. Not sure where you're getting 94-95 from.

But not tomorrow. Baseball is funny that way.

That's why it felt ontologically disruptive in 2012 when DD started sending pitchers who had options to minor-league teams in between appearances in order to maximize Buck's in-game choices. Took a while to get used to it, but then it felt maverick and brilliantly handled. Why had I assumed it's normal for pitchers to transform an active roster spot into non-Being (aka Void, Becoming) in between starts?

It also commodified "remaining options" in a way that had not been apparent to me before.

There has been a lot of emphasis at the MLB level on pitching inside.  With the Orioles of course.

HBP are pretty flat in the AL this year.    Last year, the league average was 60 and the O’s a little above at 67.     This year with 15% of the season remaining the AL is averaging 54 and the O’s at 60.

By the way, you know all those stories about how pitchers used to hit batters all the time just to teach them a lesson about crowding the plate?   So far as I can tell, it’s a complete myth.    Last year was the AL record for frequency of HBP, and of the top 10 seasons of all time, 8 have been since 2000.    I think you mainly hear this myth about the 1950’s and ‘60’s, but HBP rates then were only maybe 60% of what they are today.    Now, maybe that’s because in the old days batters didn’t crowd the plate as much, but it’s not like guys were getting hit all the time.

A fun tidbit I'd seen was Means was there with Verlander and Cole at best fastball rise last year, and Means did gain 210 rpm of Spin on his four seam in 2019, but I just heard an offhand note from July about Wojo as a guy spinning the ball better, and it appears in 2019, he picked up 170 rpm of Spin above his 2017.

I don't know where to find minor league spin, but as he didn't join Orioles until early July, it could be an interesting test of whether that was just him growing himself over those two years, or if Orioles PD had some specific tweaks to help him.

    • It’s called venting, montezuma’s revenge-o.
    • It did look like they already have their game legs back--maybe in time to make that dream come true. I live in Brooklyn and it's going to be a challenge to hold my place and my lip in the sports bars over the next three days (unless I go to one filled with Mets fans who are just letting one screen tune into the game in the Bronx).
    • Haha, yeah--Try to "Mooo!" that and see what happens.
    • Adley was 2022, not sure if Gunnar was 2022 or 2023, I think he was also 2022.
    • Oh, I thought you were taking about his hitting in high leverage situations.
    • Frustrating sure, but boring is not what I would I say. We do steal bases at times. I would like for us to play more small ball sometimes and it is frustrating to see us be so homerun happy. I think with Westy back, we will see a resurgence of timely hitting as that is very contagious.   We saw that at the beginning of the year. Amazing sight to see for sure. I think the most disheartening thing that really shocked me is the apathy and outright disgust I’ve seen from O’s fans toward their team. Perhaps we have been spoiled? No idea. Maybe expectations were too high? No idea, but frankly, a lot of yall focusing on other things and simply not watching/posting would make next season a lot more enjoyable. This is the first time since 96-97 where we make the playoffs in back to back years and you guys have been acting like some real lame jerks this whole dang season. Frankly, yall should be ashamed of yourselves. We are an incredibly young team and with that come highs and lows, but yall don’t see that. You just love to complain and moan and bloviate. Where’s the heart? Where’s the loyalty? Where’s the gratitude? You’d think with all this team has overcome, especially being so young, y’all would be happy, but no. So go off on your little bike rides or whatever. Go watch a movie if this saga seems boring to you. I don’t care. Just for once this season, keep your immense negativity to yourself.
    • Really an amazing run, 4 straight years. I completely agree with the ranking, too. There's no way Kjerstad is still a prospect though, right? 45 days is the cutoff and he's played in 48 games.
