Should we explore adding a Rookie-Level affiliate, like we used to have in Bluefield?

The bigger issue currently is that we drafted way too many college players that are too old for the GCL and not experienced enough for Delmarva and there just aren't enough roster spots at Aberdeen, so they are crushing the GCL.

Here is an existing thread on the topic.

My feeling is that if they aren't going to spend on the big league team, it would be nice to have another team to get everyone at-bats and innings.

A team can't simply be created right? We would have to pick up a team that another MLB team has dropped affiliation with.  Or can we affiliate with an Indy league team?  How does it work?  We can't just "get back" Bluefield; can we make an offer to the team that does own them? Bluefield would be the closest affiliate to me as I live in western NC (about a 3 hour drive).

It is more likely that "farms" will diminish over time (I don't like it). Back in the day, scouting, video, travel, tv, college ball is not what it is now. They needed teams to more teams to find and develop prospects. With all the tools they have today, teams recognize true prospects before they are even drafted. 90%+ will not see an inning in the majors. Most minor league teams hold fillers to help develop the few prospects. Once in a while there will be surprises, prospects that don't work out and non prospects that become good prospects. There is not much bang for the bucks spent in minors.

Good question.  I dug around a bit online but I don't see anything.  Seems like there wouldn't be a finite number of minor league affiliates permitted but who knows.

Southern Maryland Blue Crabs are independent and close but I don't know if their facilities would be up to snuff.

I think teams probably can be created from scratch in some cases.    I know the Carolina League had only 8 teams until a few years ago, when suddenly the Buies Creek Astros and Down East Wood Ducks showed up in 2017.

Those two teams came around by removing 2 from the California League: High Desert and Bakersfield.

Everyone has one AAA, AA and A (I think only one there for High A and one for Low A) team. I think you can have more at the lower levels.

Regarding Bluefield in particular:

The Bluefield Blue Jays are a minor league baseball team of the Rookie Appalachian League representing the twin cities of Bluefield, West Virginia, and Bluefield, Virginia, affiliated with the Toronto Blue Jays.

o

I used to love seeing the Bluefield Orioles play when I went to visit my girlfriend, who lives on the border of North Carolina and Virginia.

It really sucked when we gave up the Bluefield team, because that was the longest Minor League affiliation that a MLB team had in the history of baseball (53 seasons, from 1958 through 2010.)

    • Didn't see today's game in it's entirety but I will say this.  I feel 100% more confident with Mateo playing second and turning  a DP rather than JH right now.  JH will be fine there.  In time.   But even forgetting his hitting, D wise he just isn't there yet.   And yes I know the metrics say he is fine.  But to me, using the eye test, he looked very shaky fielding and throwing,
    • I like Kevin.  He is constantly improving.  My only beef is that he doesn't seem to understand that a foul ball isn't always out of play.   A ball can be hit foul, but still be in the field of play.
    • My preferred day 3 WR would have been Troy Franklin, but he apparently had a bad combine on positional drills (which might have been because he had the flu.)  And he got picked by Denver pretty early.   Devontez Walker is kind of intriguing.  He's 6'2", barely.   A bit on the skinny side but ran in the mid-4.3s.  His route tree is pretty limited, mostly short quickouts/slants and go/post routes. But he's really good at the deep routes.  Sort of a discount DK.  He's reported to have good hands and good deep ball tracking ability as well.  We have to see how that translates in the pro game.
    • Adley looks way more energized and McCann is veteran catcher who is good defensively and handles the pitchers well.  Doesn't really make sense to wear Adley out when the O's are using him at the top of the lineup.
    • Just seems like a more controlled swing from the right side, shorter, flatter.
    • He was signed in the Covid year when they only had a 5 round draft, which is why he was undrafted.  Was showing promise bur tore his UCL in 2022.  Pitched a little last year, this is his first full year back.  Nice to see the good outing.
    • What's up with Brandon Young? Out of nowhere (#30 prospect above... undrafted?) he goes 3 IP with 0 hits or walks, and 7 Ks, throwing an otherworldly 26 of 31 pitches for strikes, in Bowie's game today.
