MLB.com says Players may be placed on the 10-day injured list "retroactively," meaning the stint is backdated to the day after the last date on which the player appeared in a game.

I think Means last pitched on July 12th.    Its unclear how far he can be backdated.  I think its pretty clear that Means was not included on the 30 man roster because Elias didn't want him to count again the active roster.    Hyde has said that he thinks Means has a good chance to start vs the Marlins.   I think that is still a good projection.

July 20 is when the clock starts, according to a lot of sources including Roch.   Intrasquad games don't count anyway, they are just practices.   Exhibition games do count, so if someone played Tuesday their clock would start the 21st.

But Means, Harvey, and Tate are all eligible to come off the IL on July 30.

So they won't be able to run down the Orange Carpet at the Home Opener the day before.

And here is the 21 man Bowie minor league camp, which is our "minor league" system for now (there are 56 guys on the 60 man list so we could add up to 4 more guys here, and really 6 because Blach and Wilkerson are technically still on the 60 man list but are done for the season).  Guys not on the 40 man roster are noted as NR.

Keegan Akin
Michael Baumann  NR
Taylor Davis  NR
Yusniel Diaz  NR
Thomas Eshelman  NR
DL Hall  NR
Eric Hanhold  NR
Dilson Herrera  NR
Bryan Holoday  NR
Brendan Kline  NR
Dean Kremer
Isaac Mattson  NR
Ryan Mountcastle
Chandler Shepherd  NR
Adley Rutschman  NR
Ramon Urias
Cesar Valdez  NR
Hecor Velazquez
Austin Wynns
Mason Williams  NR
Rob Zastrzyny  NR

Nothing meaningful to add - I'm really hoping to see a good number of these guys this season because they should be better than guys currently on the 30 man.

Thanks for posting that - I had no idea they had a setup like that in Bowie.  It'd be great to see a lot of those names in Baltimore this year.  Do they get to play any games in Bowie?

That's the whole point of the 60 man pool... the guys who aren't on the MLB team are together, working out, and available for callups as needed.   Yeah, mostly intrasquad games, I heard that they might schedule occasional exhibitions with nearby teams.   The Nats' minor league camp is in Fredericksburg VA, which is between a 1 and 6 hour drive from Bowie depending on traffic.

Mullins isn't a surprise.  The 10th inning baserunner is an important "position".  And his presence lets them use Hays in RF at times.

7 infielders seems a bit much, but maybe they'll do a bunch of platooning.

The 10th inning baserunner is the guy who made the last out in the 9th.   The manager does not get to pick a guy.

But you can pinch run, especially since we have expanded rosters and a 5 man bench.  If Chris Davis made the last out in the 9th, and you have a Velazquez or Valaika on the bench who can play first, I say pinch run Mullins.

That actually might lead to a strategy;  if you have 2 outs and no on in the 9th inning of a tie game, pinch hit your fastest guy.  If he makes an out, he can start the 10th on 2nd.  If he gets on in the 9th, have him try to steal.  If he fails, he makes the last out, so he starts off the 10th on 2nd.

Of course that's our roster for a week or so, but there are potential changes to it coming pretty quickly:

July 30 -- Means eligible to come off the IL if healthy
July 30 -- Harvey eligible to come off the IL If healthy
July 30 -- Tate eligible to come off the IL if healthy
Late July / early August -- potential Mountcastle callup once we have possibly gained an extra year of service time
August 6-- roster is reduced to 28

So that means that 4 or 5 guys on that 30 will only have a short time to make an impression because they will be headed to Bowie.

Fangraphs had an interesting article about the various strategies that might be used.

Phillips, Lakins, Hess, Smith and Mullins are most vulnerable and all have options.   Tate probably waits for an injury to be called up.
