It's time for the OH to turn the page

Yes, the first X games of the schedule are always overvalued because it's all we have.  We're forced to look at SSS noise and our brains believe it's real because there is nothing else current.

It is "real," just not in the way (proof of contention) we want to believe it is (really "for real").

Right.  It's real like if you are running the 100m dash against Usain Bolt and he fell down at the starting gun.  You're actually ahead of Bolt, you're winning a real race with Usain Bolt. But you also have a pretty strong suspicion as you glance to your sides that something ain't right, and it won't last.  Because you know with 100% certainty that the reality is that Usain Bolt is a heck of a lot faster than you are.

I get the analogy but it's obviously overstating the pessimistic view of it. Are we more realistically a .500 club than a true contender? Sure. But the improvements are convincing so far, as well as the chemistry, so a sample of 60 games is closer to our 17.5 game sample than we are predisposed to think (since we're so used to 162).

It was just last year, that some of the OH posters were pissed, that they knew this team was rebuilding, but they wanted to see any improvement over the previous years junk that.

Some of us said, be patient, rebuilds take some time.

Now, we forget we are rebuild, and lets win now?

Cant and shouldnt have it both ways.

More entertaining ball is good to watch, and nice to see them win games, but lets not forget the master plan for longterm success.

IMO

At some point, the "We are rebuilding" vector, and the "We are playing better baseball" vector will naturally intersect.

Perhaps we are at the intersection.

Hey we did improve last year.   We won 7 more games than we did the previous season!

And this year if we can win 11 more games, we will improve our winning % on 2019.

Progress.

Three weeks ago suggesting that this is a .500 team would have gotten you howls of derisive laughter.  Three weeks shouldn't convince anyone of anything in baseball.

The improvement the players have made, the analytics the team is using, the coaching staff's ability to help players get better,  the players realizing their ability to succeed and being more confident all add up to an environment where the team is moving passed past history IMO.

I believe in what I am seeing.   Others are not slow thinker,  they are not convinced yet.

I don't see that as a problem for me.   I see it has a problem for everyone that keeps looking at this team is  like they were last year and can't see what is happening right in front of them.

What do you see happening right in front of you now?

Poor pitching.   Means needs to get his change up back.  Eshelman needs a chance to pitch more innings.   The pen is generally pretty good except for Lopez.   Lopez has good stuff but throws that bad pitch at the wrong time.  That is to be expected because Holt has not had time to work with him yet.   Cobb is ok but is probably being shopped right now.  Not in favor of Leblanc staying in the rotation.

Givens has to be a hot commodity.  Armstrong at almost thirty, no options, arbitration eligible next season and pitching well could go for the right offer.  That could open up some room for some of the guys currently at Bowie.

I like the hitting in general with Davis on the DH.   They get stopped by good starters but that happens  to most teams.   Excited to watch Mountcastle and Mullins.

This team is much better than last year.   Not a high draft pick team.  But a lot of moving parts in the next 10 days.

Is it?  You might be able to convince me it's a little better. But 27 games into the season the vast majority of what we know about them comes from prior to this year, so it's hard to tell if they're a little better or a little worse.  Much better isn't really on the table.

And much worse is an impossibility.

That because you have not turned the page.  You are still caught up in what was.  Last years team was one of the worst in the league.  That is not this team.

    • I have two tickets to Game 1 of the WC which I cannot use due to work travel.  Section 352, row 4, seats 9 & 10.  Asking $70 total for the two.  Paid $205 to the Orioles as a season plan member.   PM me if interested.  Paypal preferred.
    • Can't make game 1. I'll be at game 2...last time I was at a playoff game at Camden, we beat Scherzer and the Tigers.
    • He should be taking fly balls all winter.
    • That was a lot of fun. Felt like there are certain elite seasons that had to be part of the team, and then tried to build from there.  Outfield depth is a little shaky, as is the rotation — though the latter is probably mostly unavoidable. The lineup would rake and the bullpen would shove, so pretty happy with this combination.   C 2022 Adley Rutschman (5.4 rWAR) 1B: 1998 Rafael Palmeiro (6.3) 2B: 2005 Brian Roberts (7.3) 3B: 2015 Manny Machado (7.5) SS: 2024 Gunnar Henderson (8.9) LF: 1999 Brady Anderson (5.9) CF: 2021 Cedric Mullins (5.9) RF: 2008 Nick Markakis (7.4) DH: 2013 Chris Davis (7.1) Bench: 2003 Melvin Mora (4.7) Bench: 2006 Miguel Tejada (4.5) Bench: 2011 Matt Wieters (5.2) Bench: 2001 Jeff Conine (2.9)   SP: 2000 Mike Mussina (5.7) SP: 2007 Erik Bedard (5.7) SP: 2019 John Means (4.4) SP: 2002 Rodrigo Lopez (3.7) SP: 2010 Jeremy Guthrie (4.5) RP: 2016 Zach Britton (4.1) RP: 2023 Felix Bautista (3.0) RP: 2004 B.J. • Gray started off well  but then ran out of steam a bit. He's not getting any younger. I was interested in him last year but I think the Cardinals overpaid and his contract only gets worse.
    • A bit. Nothing life changing, but the format seems…Cleaner.
