Hays has hit really well since returning from injury and now has an overall slash line of .275/.333/.404 on the season.    Since returning 11 games ago, he’s hitting .400/.442/.675.    Really nice to see after the slow start he had this year.    Hopefully he can stay hot through the weekend.    

Always helps when you hit a 50 mph cookie over the Monster, too.

I was thinking the same thing last night.  A good weekend and he may be able to get his OPS close to 800.  

Shame he missed that time.

For all the love Mullins is getting, he is still a sub 700 OPs guy with good but not great defense.  Hays should still be the starter in CF from day 1 and I think he will be.

Agreed.  Good to see both Hays and Mullins putting together a solid season at this level.  I think Mullins has value as a 4th outfielder who can play all 3 positions and provide speed of the bench.  His arm is even worse than advertised though, and it was advertised as serviceable at best.

Yeah, Mullins is pretty clearly not a starting MLB outfielder, at least not for a team that hopes to be successful. But Mullins does look like he will hit/bunt enough to be a decent 4th outfielder who can pinchrun and serve as a defensive substitution at all three outfield positions at a reasonable level. 

Considering he didn't look rosterable last year, that is still a pleasant surprise. He will still be making the minimum through 2022 and he still has options, so he provides some flexibility. 

Hopefully Ryan McKenna will hit/bunt well enough to replace Mullins in that role by the end of 2021

Yes, I’m fine (at least entering the 2021 season) with Mullins as your 4th OFer and a speed guy to being off the bench late in games.  
 

Let’s just stop pretending he has any kind of real upside or that he should be starting, that’s all.

Agree Hays should be the starter.   As to defense, I’d put Mullins’ ability to get to and catch the baseball in the “great” category, Hays more in the “very good” category.  But Hays has a plus arm and Mullins has a minus one.   So overall, I think it’s about a wash as to who’s the better defensive CF, and Hays is the better hitter.    

I think we’ll be seeing a lot of Mullins as a defensive replacement late in games, and occasional starts vs. RHP.

He's probably better suited for LF at Camden Yards than center where he could be a plus defender, but he's fine in center overall. Botjh his barrel% and Hard hit % have been creeping up to MLB avg after being well below average earlier in the year so I think we are just finally seeing what a healthy, in tuned Hays looks like at the plate finally.

I still see him as one of the players that will be part of a winning future here.

All he’s gotta do is stay healthy . No injuries next year . He may not be able to sustain a high obp but neither did Adam Jones . I actually like him better in the corner outfield spot and I think that would be better for over the long haul health wise . I like the defensive alignment of Hayes in left , Mullins in center and Santander in right for now . If Mullins can keep hitting I’d like him in that lineup for now .

Similar to Hunter Harvey, this is the main problem with counting on Hays. I really think he has the talent to be a solid every day major league player, but he needs to prove he can stay healthy over an entire season. He's yet to do that and wasn't even able to get through this mini 60 game season. 

I can see a future outfield though with him back in center regularly. Mullins is better suited as a 4th outfielder than an every day starter, though Mullins is the best defensive center fielder this organization has right now that's major league ready.

      Am I crazy for thinking Burnes isn't going to sniff Cole's deal?  I'm thinking like 7/260-280.  I don't think he's going to sniff Cole's deal.  For starters i dont think hes as good a pitcher as Cole was at the time of his signing.  Also, the Yankees aren't going to be in the bidding so that leaves the Mets, Giants, Nats, Orioles as teams that can afford him.  The Sox could too, but they're on the fringe of contention and might opt to develop more with the Yankees and Orioles solidly ahead of them in division.  Only the Mets from that list really seem like teams that would go over 300m for a pitcher, but they will be pressed for money because of the luxury tax.

      Agree a strong RHP bullpen arm that misses bats would be good to add. Looking at Spotrac I don’t see who it would be. Dominguez could certainly be someone that could fill this role.

      It looks like I misread your post as being about last offseason instead of the 2017-2018 offseason.  My mistake, but does that in any way affect my overall point - you know the part that I made explicit and you left out of your response - that all the old, reflexive Angelosian nonsense no longer automatically applies? I'm unclear on what you're driving at, especially if I have to go back to the 2017-2018 offseason when Peter Angelos might still have been giving input on running the team.  I think it's a stretch to try to draw parallels to those days, or even the John Angelos years, to David Rubenstein potential as an owner.

      I forgot the name of the movie, but Jimmy Fallon was playing a BoSox superfan (tough role for an NY kid) and it was during the era of the ‘curse’ (right at the end of it actually) — a kid he was coaching asked, “What have the Red Sox ever done for you?” His character didn’t have an answer. But it made me think. The movie was out during the 14-years of losing seasons. I asked myself the same question about whether a lifetime of fandom was worth it. For me, outside of my family - 15 generations or more on the Eastern Shore - the O’s are also part of my DNA.  Win, lose, lose horribly, lose ugly, bad ownership, they just can’t shake me. All that said, I totally understand the frustration. It will take me a little longer to heal from this ugly exit to 2024.

      In the market and $$$ for SP = Mets, Cubs, BOS, WAS and SFG (depending on Snell opt-out).  That’s enough chairs when music stops for Burnes and Fried to cash in, and still ample for second tier Eovaldi, Manea, Kikuchi, Flaherty.
