Givens - Vavra and Nevin

Castro - Kevin Smith

I’m all for trading a reliever that pitches in 60-70IP for a potential everyday player and/or a SP.

Who is the O's closer in 2022 if it is not Fry?  And don't say Hunter Harvey because he is probably on the IL.

I enjoyed this bit in the piece:

A former 17th-round pick of the Mariners, Fry was traded to Baltimore for international signing bonus space back in 2017.

We rightly killed previous regimes for doing this, but maybe this becomes the blind squirrel finding a nut, eBay paper clip becoming a car, etc.

I just believe non-Mariano guys like Fry tend to be good for a few years tops and 2021 seems like one of those peak years for him to be on a contender going towards fall.

Fry 7th in seasonal value on FG's qualified relievers dashboard today.

If I roll date range back to 4-1-2019 to 7-31-2019, non-Felipe Vazquez/Roberto Osuna/Sam Dyson names in the Top 20 include Brad Hand, Ken Giles, Sean Doolittle, Ty Buttrey, Scott Oberg, Seth Lugo, Brandon Workman.   David Hernandez was 25th.

Two years out I think fair chance he's just a guy, but he's burning bright now.   I don't feel Sell High signs can get much bigger than this.

Bonus points for Elias if the return is someone from ~2017 J2 class!

I’d like a trade with the framework of trading Santander for Keston Hiura or Brendan Rodgers.

I don’t see the need to trade Fry unless Mike is blown away by an offer. He’s a valuable reliever and here for 3 more years. We’re trying to win again soon, right? Right?

Givens will be a free agent after this season.  If the price is right, I'd like to get him back as a 7th, 8th, or 9thi inning reliever.

This is what you are worried about?

I feel confident that if Fry is still here that the answer won’t be him anyway.

If you can't answer the question of who is the closer if not Fry, then he should stay.   This team looks like it is coming together in 2022.

Well first of all, the answer to the question isn’t Fry regardless.

Secondly, the answer could be a lot of different people.  Perhaps it’s someone not even in the organization right now.  Maybe it’s Hunter Harvey, Scott, Kremer or Lopez?

There are a lot of possibilities and not being able to lock down one guy right now is meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

Meaningless, yet you can not do it.   Fry is the leading candidate right now.  He has actually inherited the job and is doing it pretty well so far.

Do last place teams really need “closers”?  I think 2023 is the realistic timeframe for when this team can compete. If we can trade Fry for a SP, 3B, SS, or 2B, then you have to do that trade all day.

Plus this is a good spot to sell high. I like Fry. He’s solid, but he’s 1.5 seasons away from pitching in meaningful games for us.

Yea, it’s meaningless.  Me not being able to give you a name means nothing. A lot can change in a year.  The idea that you can say, out closer next year should be Fry means nothing.  What if he has a poor second half?  What if he gets hurt?  We don’t have an elite back end arm as of now, so you don’t have that guy you can write in pen.

I just  gave you 4 possibilities, along with the idea that it could come from outside the organization.

Doing well so far?  Has he even been announced as the new closer officially?  He has 2 saves this year with one coming in April.  What has he done to show that he can handle the 9th with a slim lead on a consistent basis?

    • I was hoping that would be this season, but he faded this second half. But even Gunnar not living up to his lofty expectation is still a good player with an .811 OPS.
    • Mike Elias simply can't offer Michael Baumann, Cristian Pache, Connor Norby and Kyle Stowers this kind of experience. Jack Flaherty was kind of Meh again, but hey, at least he isn't on Detroit for this weekend. It is a special player to get to watch.    He's reviving some of the Babe Ruth "he hits too brilliantly to let him pitch" stuff, but hombre is going to do whatever he wants to do, it is part of the deal.    It does seem pretty likely the SB to this scale are a 1-time deal with the legs getting the year off from the mound. I do have a baseball-y wish to see if he could be Ken Griffey, Jr. in center field if he tried.

    • Hopefully it will be like giving a blood transfusion to a sickly patient. Yes some players haven't played as well this season, but it's mainly the injuries that have taken it's toll. The lineup gets much better if Westburg, Urias and Mountcastle are back. No longer does Eloy have to play and Holliday can be platooned. Plus O'Hearn will absolutely not see at bats against LHP like he has been recently at times. Webb and Coulombe provide depth to make the bullpen postseason viable. And Coulombe can close games instead of Dominguez assuming he's back all the way.
    • Gunnar stands to improve on: fielding and stolen bases. I also think he’ll have a 1.000OPS season or two before he’s done.
    • Maybe they were going by Tony's reaction, not realizing that with the winning run on third there wasn't any point in running.
    • looks like some of y'all are gonna be pissed when we win 2 of 3 against Detroit, at least one in NY and 2 o 3 against Minn.  I'd be embarassed if I were some of you....projecting the apathy and misery in your own little lives onto our O's.  This is a F upped sport and a team with talent like this can turn on a dime and start winning consistently at any time.  This isn't over.  I you're mad that your life hasn't worked out well......please don't bring the rest of us down.
