why not pinch hit for gunnar with bases loaded and no outs? put a right hand bat in there,he was the DH tonight. he hit right into the worst kind of double play, not confidence building.

He was 2-3 with three runs driven in to that point.  Why wouldn’t you let him hit?

In the simplest of terms, we call it 20/20 hindsight.  It's what people do when the result of an otherwise logical decision is not the desired result, so clearly, in retrospect, Ryan McKenna would have been the better option given the outcome that we got., because with him striking out, we would still have had the bases loaded 🤓

If for some reason we miss the playoffs and botch the rest of the season should Hyde be fired?

Depends on what went wrong.

And no, I don't think there's a scenario where Hyde would be fired because they miss the playoffs. If they don't make the playoffs it will most likely be for reasons beyond his control... injuries or not having the best players up.

Playing for one run in extras when you're the road team is already pretty questionable, but even more if you're going to give the bottom of the inning to Austin Voth. Unless Hyde thinks that Mateo is so unlikely to get a hit on his own that bunting actually has higher scoring potential. In which case Lester should have pinch hit for Mateo.

I agree, but he said Felix was coming back in if they scored a run

I think the idea was that it was reasonable to expect Bautista could pitch two innings, but not three.

He came in for the bottom of the ninth with the idea that if the Orioles could score in the top of the tenth (not all that difficult to imagine, if Mateo could have gotten a bunt down), then Bautista could close the game in the bottom of the tenth.

But once the Orioles failed to score in the top of the tenth, they couldn't win the game without someone having to pitch not only the bottom of the tenth, but at least the bottom of the eleventh as well.  At that point, it made sense to bring in someone who might be able to pitch multiple innings, and save Bautista for later in the series.
