Open 40-man spot

With Wade's DFA, the O's have an open 40-man roster spot since Lowther was already on it.

Some ideas:

  • Claim C Deivy Grullon from Rays. Not likely since we have Wynns and Ciuffo if we need to make a change, but Grullon's got interesting AAA numbers and he's only 25. His supporters say he just hasn't been given a proper shot.
  • One of the aforementioned catchers is added, giving the 40-man 3 catchers and giving the organization the ability to option Sisco if they feel he needs a reset.
  • Eshelman is added. There's a TBD rotation spot that would have belonged to Kremer, but it doesn't appear he's coming back just yet. And Eshelman is basically a better, right-handed version of Wade LeBlanc. Does he have an option left? If so, useful guy to yo-yo around this year.
  • Maybe Lowther gets the TBD start and a reliever is added like Hanhold. He's been lights-out at the alternate site.
  • (Speaking of the alternate site, can we trust any numbers there since Ryan Ripken is currently killing it?)
  • Other possible reliever additions: Greene, Abad.
  • The O's finally move to a 4-man bench and add someone like Wilkerson (currently hitting well at alternate site, but again, Ryan Ripken...). I find this to be the least likely for several reasons, but mostly because the club already has Martin, Jones, and Bannon on the roster.

Thoughts?

Its a good point.   Elias will no doubt scan the waiver wire for someone he likes.   An injury could push him to add a replacement player.   O's need help at 2B but that could be Jones in a few weeks. Starters are always welcome if they have potential.   O's are short left-handed relievers if Fry or Scott go down.  It would have to be someone special to add a catcher.   Adley is on the fast track.

The Orioles already passed on Grullón last time he was DFA'd, before he was claimed by the Rays on April 6th. Doubt much has changed since then, although Sisco has been lousy in his 28 plate appearances.

Eshelman does have an option. He doesn't do much for me, would rather go with one of the young guys who occasionally strike people out if they need someone to eat innings. Would rather see Hanhold, Greene, or Abad.

I question whether the guys on the 40 are so valuable that he needs an open space in order to claim or bring somebody up.

If we’re going to bring up a pitcher,  Bring up whoever has done best. And in the case of a tie go with the young guy. If Adding a position player PLEASE DEAR LORD Someone who is outstanding on defense, and I don’t mean by oriole standards, but by real life standards.

But yes I would also applaud the addition of a catcher.

Always cool for a guy to be making his MLB debut, hopefully Flaa gets in a game before he is optioned or DFA'd.

I have no problem with using the spot as a Make-A-Wish prize for minor league lifers for a couple weeks. Bring up Mickey Jannis next. Then Ryan Ripken. Make it weird.

Hopefully this is extremely temporary.

I’m sure it is.  Flaa is someone we can DFA without much risk he’ll be claimed.    He’ll be gone when Kremer returns

Exactly. A couple days in the bigs will be a life long memory, plus he gets free health insurance, which isn’t cheap. Good for him!

Flaa does not need to be DFA'd to bring Kremer back.   Flaa has an option and Kremer is already on the 40 man roster.   However if they want Eshelman to start on Wed then they could DFA Flaa.

    • Very weak.  OTOH, there's still a possibility that Jackson Merrill won't win in the NL.  Who didn't want Cowser to have had that rookie season?
    • Who’d a thunk it? There’s a chance? Almost like it’s a long season. Now if only that Mayo guy would do something.
    • Jeez, it really was a welcome game tonight.  I had a good buzz going...   Now I have to factor in your chronic angst.  Thanks man.
    • If we enter the Yankees series down by three games, we have a mathematical chance. However, we are going to have to intentionally walk Judge and Soto every single AB. The athletics did us no favors tonight.  Still four games out..
    • I know. I'm a hand wringer and a whiner when it comes to this team. I sometimes annoy myself with all this baseball nonsense. But really deep down,I'm still the 8 year old who lived and died with every Oriole game. Still. Im that kid. So when this team was really horrible like for most of the second half, it almost made me nauseous just to watch them lose in all kinds of ways. Then all those injuries in a wave. I really felt they weren't going to make the postseason at all. But baseball is a crazy game, and a light switch can be turned on in an instant. Maybe that Santander walk off HR on Thursday threw a switch. Because Friday night, this was a different team. They still strike out a lot, and Burnes was brilliant, but I feel maybe something is moving. Seeing Coluombe come in and strike two batters out, and Webb, not as good, but good enough with a big lead...and to see Cowser and McCann blast two, and Tony again with a HR...It got my juices flowing. Look, maybe they wont play well this weekend, maybe they will. And then the dreaded Yankees might break our hearts next week. But why think that way now.?Urias is coming, then Westburg, then maybe Mounty, and even possibly Grayson at the end . If we can somehow put the pieces together and get our mojo back, and have the players contribute, we maybe, just maybe, might have a little ray of hope.I still think this roster is talented when all our pieces are together, and as good as anyone when we are playing well. So, I'm not asking for a miracle. I'm just asking for a chance to see this team with most of the pieces together again, and compete.Maybe it's even a long shot, but I am still that 8 year old living and dying for a chance to see my boys make me proud. And these are my boys.
    • Velocity was 1.5-2mph down across the board. Movement was good, especially the sweeper. The fastballs worry me at that velocity though... not sure he should be immediately high leverage in the way he used to be.
    • Nicely done. Lol. Yes I remember that with Minnesota.
