Are there pitchers at Delmarva worth following?

In his first two drafts, Mike Elias has mostly chosen hitters in the higher rounds, and the Dominican operation isn’t ready to bring players who’ve risen to the full season teams.  Yet, Delmarva ranks second in the Low A East with a 3.20 ERA.  So is there anyone there worth paying serious attention to?

The way the Shorebirds are using their staff, it’s really hard to tell.   No pitcher has made more than 6 starts, and none have thrown more than 33 innings.   10 different pitchers have started at least one game, excluding Mike Baumann who made two short rehab starts.   But in any event, here are six pitchers I’ve got my eye on:

1.   Ignacio Feliz — the second youngest pitcher on the team at 21, Feliz has been used more as a reliever than a starter but has started 3 times vs. 6 relief appearances.   In 31.0 innings (5th on the team), he has a 1.16 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 9.3 K/9.   He’s allowed only 16 hits but has walked 17.

2.  Griff McLarty — Elias’ no. 8 pick in 2019, he’s 22.   He’s thrown 31.2 innings in 9 appearances, 5 of which were starts.   So far he has a 3.13 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 11.9 K/9.   He has 42 K’s vs. only 10 walks.  

3.  Brandon Young — a 22-year old undrafted free agent from 2020, Young is second on the team in IP at 32.2 in 9 appearances, 6 starts.   He has a 3.58 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 11.3 K/9.   He’s allowed 
only 23 hits vs. 17 BB. 

4.  Zach Peek — getting his first taste of pro ball at age 23, Peek was an Angels 6th round pick in 2019, and acquired in the Bundy trade.   Coming into today (he’s pitching as I write this), he’d thrown 29.1 innings in 9 appearances, 5 starts.   He has a 3.07 ERA, 1.16 ERA, 12.6 K/9.   He’s allowed 22 hits while walking 12 going into play today.  (Note: Peek allowed 1 run in 4 IP today, striking out 5 while allowing 3 hits and walking 1.  He took over the IP lead from Shane Davis, mentioned below.)

5.  Adam Stauffer — being used solely as a reliever, the 23-year old was an Orioles 19th rounder in 2017.   He’s worked 19.2 innings in 10 appearances, throwing to a 1.37 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 11.4 K/9.    He’s allowed 13 hits while walking 5.   

6.  Ryan Watson — at 23, another undrafted free agent.  He has thrown 22.0 innings in 8 appearances, three of which were starts.   He sports a 1.23 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 13.1 K/9.   He’s allowed 17 hits while walking 6.   
 

Other notables: Shane Davis leads the team with 33 IP at age 21, undrafted free agent Noah Denoyer is third in IP.  There’s quite a few other guys who could get on the radar screen.

I’d keep an eye on Houston Roth. He had been following Peek recently. 
 

10 games, 32.1 innings with a 3.90 ERA after a rough earlier outing. 36 k’s to 13 walks and a 1.08 WHIP.

Peek…part of the Bundy trade.  Velocity increased over the offseason. 
 

Initriguing arm but one who is too old for his league, so I would like to see him getting called up soon.

Last Friday "Locked on Orioles" did a nice piece on the underrated Delmarva staff. They interviewed the Delmarva Director of Broadcasting joined and talked about the UFDA's, older guys for the league, etc with names mentioned above. Griff is the highest drafted player and is doing well, but others deserve recognition.

Peek is the best if the group overall prospect wise. He really shows a pretty good feel for pitching overall, but there's not a ton of upside on the stuff. Young is the best of the undrafted guys from what I've seen so far, but Denoyer was throwing harder than I've seen him this year in his last start and his slider at times was a swing and miss pitch. Feliz is another guy who's velocity has ticked up as the weather has gotten hot hitting 96 in his last start. He has a reliever vibe too me with a mainly fastball slider mix though he does mix in a change.

I haven't really caught McLarty enough to have too strong of an opinion on him but hs velocity was not very high and I didn't see anything in his stuff that stood out to me. 

Stauffer hit 92 in his last appearance, but seems to sit more at 90 which is why I think they are only giving a couple innings a week. His stats look better than his stuff. Watson is a soft tossing lefty that can dominate young hitters with mixing his stuff up.
