I think (and thought) @Can_of_corn was onto something last year when he noted the O’s didn’t spend their full pool. Maybe Cowser is getting slot and Trimble and Rhodes cost more than we think, but Faleris knows what he’s talking about and says the O’s have money to spend today. We’ll see...

4th Year Seniors

We seem to have drafted a lot of them, and the assumption is that they are "cheaper" because they have fewer options (their only option is to go back to college for a 5th year, which is allowed because of Covid, then they would be in next year's draft at 23 or 24).

But of course we are concentrating on the Orioles draft and I wanted to see if we were way above average in drafting college seniors.

So I checked.   Through 13 rounds, 402 picks, there have actually been 102 guys drafted listed as 4YR SR on the MLB draft tracker.  That's 25.8%

The Orioles have taken 14 players, and 5 of them, 35.7%, are college seniors.   So we are above the norm, but I would never have guessed that 100 have gone.   College seniors clearly are a significant part of this draft cohort, and not just a way to save money on a pick, although that savings may exist.

Should we expect the overslot to be the last 2-3 picks? Wouldn't it make sense to call the guys and say will you sign for X amount and then they can relay to all other teams not to draft them? The orioles can fill their roster with other guys and take the overslots later or is that not a thing?

6/16 = 37.5% now

Based on what I know about past drafts, that’s not really a thing. They could’ve/should’ve talked to the representatives for any overslot players they were interested in after days 1 and 2 of the draft to get the number it would take for the player to sign and then taken them, not wait to round 19.

Well that's disappointing to hear. I was really hoping the O's would draft some overslot arms today.

They could surprise us. I’m only saying it’s not exactly common and I’m not expecting it.

The kids can't stop other teams from drafting them.  Or maybe the other team is willing to spend as much or more than the O's for one of these kids?

Ain't nobody got the kind of money left to spend that we do.
