"If you think our starting lineup is bad, wait until you see our bench players."

Orioles might be better off asking their best hitting pitcher to pinch hit when trailing in the ninth inning over Owings.

Orioles might have tied or even won tonight's game off Chapman in the ninth inning if their best pinch hitter wasn't Owings.

If you think our starting lineup is bad, wait until you see our bench.

Okay. I don't get it.

Up until the last couple days when we've seen Urias at SS with Mateo injured. I just assumed the sole reason Owings was on the team was because he could play SS along with several other positions (including OF) which allowed him to fill--albeit with no bat--essentially two spots.

I didn't like the reasoning, but if they weren't comfortable with Urias playing SS, it was at least a somewhat understandable reason why Owings is still here. Now, I just don't get it at all. He's a career 72 OPS+ hitter with a 35 OPS+ this year. He's 30 so he's not a future piece at all. Sure, he was good in 50 PA last year, but has been awful in 46 this year. He's likely closer to the middle of those two which is still not a good player.

If they're willing to start Urias at SS (even if just for a few days) there's really no spot that makes sense. Right now, the bench is Bemboom, Owings and McKenna. To me, Bannon, Gutierrez, and Martin all make more sense.

Now, I'm just hopeful Long gets a look over Owings since he's apparently on this team over the other three I mentioned.

Lost in all the late-inning, Rutschman, and bullpen excitement was this crucial contribution by the much-maligned Owings: a perfectly laid-down bunt that moved AR up to 3rd base so that he could score on a very weak squibbler that Choi probably blew because he was thinking of the runner sprinting home. That's how you're supposed to win a few games every season, but most of the last decade it's been very iffy to ask our hitters simply to bunt. Kudos to Owings not only for the bunt, but also the quick smooth grab and throw to get the force-out at second in the top of the 10th while a Ray was running home.

He did lay down a very good bunt.  I was nervous about it, since be bunted into a double play the last time he tried one.

Nice bunt and all, especially since he failed miserably that other time with the bunt double play.

But what more does Richie Martin have to do to replace Owings?

.293 .369 .466 .835

🤷‍♂️

Wow didn't know Martin was putting up numbers like that. To SLG .466 / OPS .835 with only one home run in 116 ABs is impressive (11 doubles, 3 triples compensated). Plus 11 for 12 stealing and a strong showing in Spring Training. So you've got a good point. I wonder: Are they trying him at new defensive positions? Has he been error-prone (no fielding stats for his AAA perf on Baseball-Reference)?

    • Baring injury Adley gets more War. Who do you want up to bat in a winner take all playoff game? Who do you want behind the plate with a Rickey Henderson type on first base in a tie ballgame 9th inning? I really bought into the switch hitting Jesus thing with Wieters.  This disappointment (perhaps misguided) led me to really not want to use a 1/1 draft pick on a catcher.   I am kind of wishing we went with Witt.   I think I heard people saying the most important position on defense is catcher.  So how does it compare to SS or Centerfield.   Would you be better off using Rick Dempsey type all glove and arm with light bat or going all in on a 1/1 on a catcher? If this has already been discussed tons dont yell at me I sometimes go months or weeks without posting.
    • Glad Bob Melvin and I don’t see eye to eye on that issue Well said, that make two of us, Bunting Ced down 5-3 with nobody out that late in the game is absurd.
    • Sorry to hear this--wishing you a sound recovery, in time for the O's run to the Series! (That would speed up the healing!)
    • Santander is a good case for the Rule V draft. That's unfortunately the same system that's going to make his next contract potentially look bad. If only he were a couple of years younger. It's hard to commit 25+M to a player at 30+. He's going to be missed in Baltimore, on the field and by the fans, but he's someone that they're going to have to let move on.
    • While I agree and find your comment funny, maybe just say something along the line of”Don’t give up on this team” or “Quite being Debbie downers” instead of assuming they are projecting the own misery in their lives. People might take it better if it doesn’t feel like a personal attack. Either way, that win felt good and I HOPE this is finally the turning point going into the playoffs soon.
    • I've made it clear that if they don't sign Santa and Burnes I'm ok with it as long as the money is allocated to other players they feel that fits their profile better .You know you have people on here like SG who only hears what he wants to hear. I need to learn to ignore that guy.
