Ellis has contract selected/Stewart DFA'd/Diplan optioned

No point here, just thought it was interesting. 

 

I think a point could be made that the O's have been giving a lot of ABs to marginal major leaguers.  Players who's career will likely be over next year or the year after.

So after 4-plus shutout innings in his first start (albeit with four hits and 3 BB's), Ellis fails to get an out, giving up 5 runs in his second start. Last year he put up a 2.49 ERA but greatly outperformed other metrics (5.7 K/9 vs 4.6 BB/9, 5.22 FIP) as well as his minor league resume. I thought the minor league contract was worth a shot but I wonder how many more starts he gets with Bradish and Grayson breathing down his neck.

Probably none considered he's injured.

Welp I thought he'd be released but @wildcardwas right, Stewart gets the AAA assignment. Feel bad for the guy honestly but maybe he puts up some numbers and gets traded or something.

Ellis on the IL.   Stewart cleared waivers and was assigned to Norfolk.  Alex Wells called up.

Not surprised at all that Stweart cleared waivers. I'm mildly surprised the Orioles didn't just release but I guess they culd decide he's than Stowers or Neustrom who are the next two outfielders to be recalled.

Triple-A has the expanded rosters, and Vavra is out, he's insurance I guess. But if I was Stewart I would want to find a different org. Not sure how that works though, if he's allowed to refuse?

I thought the first time you were DFA'ed, you had to stay with your current team if unclaimed.  I'm pretty sure the O's would accomodate Stewart if he found an organization that wanted him.

A player who is DFA'd may only be outrighted to the minor once without his permission.   The 2nd time he can refuse and become a free agent or accept the assignment and become a free agent at the end of the season if he is not put on the 40 man roster.
