I would think Mateo has better range and better arm.  Ortiz has better hands and better glove.

The advanced metrics claim Mateo has below avg range (he is negative in both OAA and UZR), again it's a small sample size though. Most reports on Ortiz have him at above avg range.

Watching him. He can go in the hole and has the arm to make the play.  He ranges from SS behind 2B.   Excellent range IMO.

Statcast has him at -2 OAA last year, 0 this year.   OK with me if you prefer the eye test in this small a sample.

Glad I have your permission to go with what I see.  If he stays healthy I think most fans will see it.

He does not have Hardy's hands and glove.   He will make some errors.

It’s far to small a sample for deterministic statements, and uzr and oaa have their own limitations as well.

My issues when I try to the the eye test though are that a) I don’t remember all the balls that just become singles. It’s much easier to remember the balls that are gotten to (be it an out or error) then the ones that just aren’t.

B) you need to know the starting point. Was the dive made because they got a great first step and got to a ball no one else would, or bc they got a terrible one, and it’s a routine play for everyone else. I call this the Jeter

Mateo is one of these guys who looks better when you watch him than what the numbers show.   His OPS is .657 after a homer and a triple tonight.   The triple was kind of amazing.   Mateo hit a ball off the RF scoreboard and wasn’t really running full out as he approached 1B, but as soon as he saw the RF mishandle the carom for just a split second, he turned on the jets and slid into 3B well before the relay throw arrived.   He’s really blindingly fast.   He’s definitely got some pop, too.  He just needs to get a bit more selective at the plate.  Defensively he’s improving with regular reps at SS.

Thank you.  Thank you very much.

I don't know what the numbers say, but he looks more selective at the plate this year and just more relaxed and confident overall.  He had some nice at bats in game 3 last night with a long high fly to LF and a line out to RF.  Good to see him get something to show for it tonight.   And oh btw, his feeds to Odor on the DP's have been PERFECT.

I wish they'd show a version of OPS that counts SB-CS in total bases for SLG and subtracts CS for OBP. With the 7 steals and 1 caught, his OPS in that sense is .719.

It'd be nice to see bunting as a bigger part of his game. Looks like he's just 0-2 this year trying to bunt for a hit.

I'm not sure if Mateo is a starter on a championship contending team, but worst case having someone like him as a backup middle infielder off the bench, with crazy speed to be able to use as a pinch runner late in games as well. I think there's a definitely a role for him. With potential there for him to become more but I think that's his floor to be honest. Fantastic waiver claim.
