Good deal for Seattle IMO.  2023 was Arb 3, so four years beyond that.  FA ages 31-34.

That’s an interesting deal for Castillo.  He had a couple “meh” years, I would’ve thought he would get more though.

That’s great value.  Castillo is an easy 1b type starter.  The M’s will be tough the next few years with that rotation - Ray, Castillo, Gilbert, Kirby…

The most interesting part of the deal is this:  If Castillo undergoes a UCL reconstructive surgery (Tommy John) during the course of the contract then the Mariners get a $5 million dollar option on 2028.

At only a hair above $20 million per year, it feels like a pretty significant bargain compared to what mid-rotation guys like Jon Gray and E-Rod got in free agency last offseason, but love the trend of reasonable pre-FA extensions and hope the Elias can also get in on the action in the coming years. Hitting on a couple of those can really help lay the foundation for a sustained run, i.e. Adam Jones' and JJ Hardy's (the first one at least) extensions during the DD era.

Back of napkin I guess this is around $24 AAV for  FA years if its judged 1/12 for Arb3 and 4/96 for FA seasons 1.1 years out.

Castillo-Ray-Gausman-Berrios-Musgrove are for me kind of a flat basket as Mountcastle-Mancini-Mullins-Hays-Santander were for me as the supporting cast of the early Adley teams.

The industry seems to have some consensus what this kind of house is worth.

Well of course it did cost Seattle their 1,3, 5 prospects to now be in a position to sign him to this pre free agent deal

Rodon's basically positioning himself for the Ray-Gausman-Musgrove-Castillo contract, so that'll be the basic question for Elias' taste, and figuring higher AAV shorter term guys like Verlander-deGrom aren't taking his calls.
