Orioles Claim Daz Cameron

At first glance I was excited that we signed Cameron Diaz, then I read it again

This is purely Elias going after someone he drafted and thinks he can unlock what he saw back when Cameron was drafted. I have no problem with this move provided he's ultimately designated off the 40-man and starts the year in AAA. Of course, someone else may claim him, but no problem with using some of the early offseason roster flexibility to see if you can grab him and pass him through waivers when teams are tightening up their 40-man rosters in preparation for the Rule-5. If you keep him and pass him through you can try and get at whatever untapped potential Elias and company sees. If not, no big harm.

She did look pretty good in the batting cage in There’s Something About Mary.  But then again, she always looks pretty good.

If I’m reading fangraphs and baseball savant correctly, there are some positive signs between EV, sprint speed, xwoba, xslug, etc.

In just 23 PAs (SSS) Cameron slashed .300/.391/.400/.791 against lefties last year and .252/.333/.370/.703 in 144 PAs last year.

McKenna slashed .270/.333/.460/.794 in 63 PAs against lefties last year.

It's look to me that Cameron gets the edge in hitting potential a bit with the higher EVs Hardhit% and xwOBA being higher. McKenna gets the edge though on defense with the better OOA and arm.

Either way, Cameron looks to be a deeent 4th/5th outfielder though I'd take McKenna over him because you can use McKenna late in games for defense or pinch running.

It does look like McKenna has the edge on defense.  According to Fangraphs overall base running looks pretty close to me.  In fact, Cameron is 9-9 in stolen bases in 73 career games while McKenna is 3-4 in 193 games. 
 

Again, just thinking of Cameron’s pedigree here.   Elias likely tries to get him through waivers before the rule 5.

I don't think Cameron has ever been outrighted.  So if the O's can get him through waivers he will have to accept the assignment to Norfolk.

That's kind of what I meant by roster fodder. Someone that he's interested in but could be let go if something better comes along. My guess is that he gets placed on waivers at the R5 roster deadline in hopes that he sneaks through.

This is a pretty solid claim though. I do agree that Elias may try to sneak him through closer to the Rule 5 draft, but he's a good backup plan to McKenna as a 4th outfielder.

We all know what Ryan “Babe Ruth” McKenna does when he’s demoted to AAA. 
 

I like the pickup. We haven’t seen Elias do the DD depth pick ups, other than waiver wire pickups. I like McKenna, but we were also a little thin with true CF depth. 
 

I also like that Cameron looks to be a better platoon partner with Mullins than McKenna is/was. It’s incremental improvements like this that matter when you just miss the playoffs. We’ll see what happens in ST, but I see Cameron on the roster of McKenna, and he’ll be the RH part of our CF platoon, to start the season. This isn’t the end of the road for McKenna.
