Orioles Claim Daz Cameron

Elias draft pick from the Houston days and a “headliner” in the Verlander deal. I’m not shocked, so I didn’t put it in the moves that completely befuddle us thread. No success at the major league level.

These other Clubs, they keep using Mike Elias' players wrong.   He's gonna show 'em.

Its astonishing the success Carlos Correa has had considering he hasn't even be used The Oriole Way yet.

At first glance, looks like the right-handed hitting, outfielder version of Rio Ruiz. A failed Elias draft pick from his days in Houston available because everybody else has figured out he's not very good.

26 next season.  Has not hit well at AAA yet.   Has CF speed.  No options left.  Seems hard for him to make the team out of ST.

I think he is roster fodder. My guess is he doesn't make it to ST.

That was the draft where Elias scored huge on Alex Bregman ($5:9 mm as no. 2 overall) and Kyle Tucker ($4.0 mm as no. 5 overall), but also wasted $4 mm on Cameron at no. 37.   Oh well, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad!

I think at some point Elias tries to get him through waivers to AAA.   He may be in ST.

I don't think Cameron has ever been outrighted.  So if the O's can get him through waivers he will have to accept the assignment to Norfolk.

I see Elias building AAA depth. Just like the Carchers. He’ll try and sneak these guys through waivers.

GM Meetings are going on in Vegas this week.    Maybe everybody's heading out to a show this evening.

I first thought of Mateo.  A highly regarded amateur player with tools who hasn’t hit.  First question.   Isn’t he a slightly lesser version of Ryan McKenna but with maybe more upside?  Second question.  When is a player like this most likely to slip through waivers?  Wouldn’t it be at the last minute when setting your 40-man roster before the rule 5?    No team is going to claim Cameron and then risk losing him if and when they send him down next ST.    It’s like a game of musical chairs.  The last team to outright Cameron before the rule 5, can send him to AAA and see if they can unlock his potential.   
 

If I’m reading fangraphs and baseball savant correctly, there are some positive signs between EV, sprint speed, xwoba, xslug, etc.

Mateo was my first thought, too. It'd be pretty cool if he turned into something useful in Baltimore. Not getting my hopes up, but I'd love to be surprised.
