“Hi John, this is Dan Connolly.  I’m calling to schedule my appointment to look at the Orioles’ financials.”

”Dan who?  Never heard of you.”  (Click.)

Yea, as if that is some real offer or that he would be honest about anything.

The man never gives a public appearance, does some fake, fluff thing where he throws chump change at something and doesn’t expect Os questions?  Pathetic.

Good on Dan for asking these questions. He knows Elias can’t/won’t say anything, so might as well ask Fredo and see if he slips up. Don’t hide away in Nashville and maybe you get the benefit of the doubt.

And hiding behind it being MLK Day is weak. I’m sure MLK would want to make sure the billionaire nepotism boy is well protected. 🙄

It wasn't even a hard hitting question. "What are you plans a year, 2, 5." Meaning, what is the ownership plan i.e. selling the team etc.

HOW DARE YOU ASK QUESTIONS ON MLK DAY!

What a POS.

Yeah he should’ve been able to spin that around into a positive instead of acting like a douche.

I'm not sure where to put this but didn't think it merited its own thread. Richmond has approved construction of a new 8,000 seat stadium to replace the existing AA stadium affiliated with the SF Giants. Hard date for opening in 2025. I got this from a VP of the construction Co awarded a $1 B contract to build it over the weekend. I only mention it because apparently the Nats tried to move AAA Rochester to Richmond in 2021 and were expected to try again when the new facility was done. Probably not good news for Norfolk if that happened.  https://www.sportstravelmagazine.com/richmond-moves-forward-on-flying-squirrels-ballpark/

He set a trap and Connolly walked right into It. He definitely knew the question was coming (although he warned Connolly not to ask it). This was not an off the cuff response.

That said, Connolly's question was in poor taste.

He didn’t set a trap. Today was a PR event. John wanted today to be about him.

I’m not saying John is not sincere about helping the community. That said why hold this today if it’s not about promotion?

Iirc, when the story broke, it said “couldn’t be reached for comment”.

Ok, I get that. You don’t want to talk at that time. But it’s not like people aren’t talking about it or want to know.

He isn’t going to offer anything up on MLK day, Arbor Day or any other day. He’s an ambulance chaser. There is nothing genuine about him.

This whole thing did made him look like a bigger fraud than he already was.

Here is the deal. He can avoid all of what happened today if he holds an end of the year presser.

He claims he is transparent while never being available. He wants the media to promote this while never addressing a damn thing.

So hard to root for people like this. My childhood affection for the Orioles will not allow me to stop caring. That said he comes across as another elite who is tone deaf at best. The Orioles are bigger than who the current owner is. If he didn’t own the team nobody would give a damn who he is.

...because Baltimore is 62.6% African-American. And Angelos was right, it wasn't the time or place for the question, but Connolly was also right, in that there is no apparent right time or place for the question.

Super rich people live in an alternate reality it seems like and it’s interactions like this that make me say so. What kind of response is this? I feel bad for his maids and drivers he has to interact with after this. His glass of milk served to him before his servants tuck him in to bed will never be the right temperature. Good lord.

    • I think there is a better term than "angry" to describe some of the O's. Anger seldom results in anything positive. Now, playing with attitude is another thing. GH is certainly the "King" of attitude on this team, no one is going to beat him. I believe there are several position players that show attitude in different ways. Pitchers?? SP throw 90 or so pitches. They can't afford to display emotions or they would be worn out much earlier. They also can't afford to have the "deer in the headlights" look. Of the O's starters, I believe CP is in that world at present. It's mainly an experience and growth thing.  GR, IMO, has approved significantly in that department over the last year.
    • On close examination of Kjerstad today (July 7), I hope he is not part of any trade package. This kid is a bull, with power potential that is off the charts.  He runs surprisingly well and that throw to the plate from left was very impressive, if a bit high. I can see him planted in left field for a long time, perhaps in a platoon with Hays the rest of the year, but eventually full time if he proves able to hit southpaws.
    • I like this idea better, but I am curious to what it would take to secure Mason Miller.
    • I totally get it.  It’s a huge risk vs. reward situation, but getting someone like him (if he’s still strong) or Skubal could make a major difference come October for you guys over the next three seasons.
    • IMHO it's not about whether Crochet is an "opener" or a reliever, it's the innings.  He's never thrown more than 65 innings (at college in 2019) in his entire college or pro career and stands at 105.1 today.  Let that sink in.  On top of that, there is Crochet's TJ surgery, where he missed all of 2022 and had multiple stints on the IL in 2023 as he was recovering, tossing a total of 25 IP. Does any of this mean he cannot throw double (130 IP) or triple (195 IP) his prior max?  No one can say for certain, but I'd think any reasonable person would agree that, at the very least, it's a far riskier proposition for someone like Crochet than a pitcher who has been a starter and has thrown 150+ IP before.  So, to recap: The most innings he's ever thrown was 65 IP in college (2019) After throwing 54 innings of relief for the White Sox in 2021, he missed all of 2022 with Tommy John surgery He followed up in 2023 by throwing a total of 25 innings of relief, as he dealt with a couple of IL stints recovering from TJ His first ever pro start came this season and he's been dynamite through 105.1 IP Elias and Sig are well aware of the risks and it will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.
    • Gunnar doing a good job of hitting the ball to all fields.
    • Tell me the cost and I would probably sign up. What about you Qauntrill, Scherzer and Yates and you got to keep all top 4 prospects?
