Coby Mayo 2023

I remember Mayo sharing Florida is who we bought him out of, and now the Gators Wyatt Langford, college class of 2023, has become an aircraft carrier level prospect for Rangers teams we'll be battling with the next bunch of years.

It'll be interesting to see if the Jung/Carter/Langford young guys can get really good before the Seager/Semien/Adolis old guys start tailing off.

Mayo is -5.4 than the league average so a bit of scuffling to begin was likely to be expected (though my homer self was of course hoping he'd explode on the scene).

He’s very young for the league but l think the whole -5.4 thing is kind of misleading.  The average age in AAA may be 26.4, but the median age for a major league debut is 25.029 so far this year and most good prospects hit the majors much sooner.  There are six players who debuted earlier this year at an age younger than Mayo is today.  Again, I’m not debating that Mayo is quite young for a AAA player.

Mayo is going to be robbed of so. Many homers at Camden Yards.

That's one way to look at it. Another way to look at it is he's the rare type of elite power RHH that will actually be able to hit the ball out of Camden Yards consistently.

Mayo has been asked about it and he isn't concerned. He hits nukes.

Mountcastle hits nukes too and he gets frustrated.  I think they are going to move it in a little at some point.

Also, the old wall was very short.  I don’t  consider players to be “robbed” by the new wall every time a ball is hit that would have been over the old one.  In my mind, they’re only robbed if the hit would have been out in the vast majority of stadiums.  That does happen, but nowhere near as frequently as people think.

Despite some struggles at AAA, Mayo now has a 9.3% BB rate and 23.7% K rate. The low K rate is huge, since the only question with him offensively really is how the hit tool will play against better pitching. So far, so good.

With his ability to impact the baseball he’s going to do better than the .250 BABIP and .218 ISO that he has so far at AAA. If those start to come around and he keeps the decent K rate intact, watch out.

Definitely agree with this sentiment. It was certainly convenient when JJ Hardy was poking balls out in LF, but it was at the expense of our entire pitching staff.

Pretty sure they've mentioned that they could potentially move it back in a bit. Either way, Mountcastle's problems don't stem from missing out on HRs due to the wall. When he gets ahold of one it's gone.

True, but Elias suggested it earlier in the year with some potentially other planned revisions.

He did, but it was more “could” than “will.”  In any event I’m sure it will be several years before any refresh happens.   And, uh, there is that small matter of signing a long term lease before any renovations happen.
