Dylan Beavers 2023

Per Dylan White in Baseball America regarding breakout prospects for 2023.

OF Dylan Beavers, Orioles
High-A Aberdeen • Age: 21

With plus grades for power, speed and arm strength, Beavers has a high floor and the ability to play any outfield position. If he could approach even an average hit tool, he would be a potential offensive monster. After drafting him in the supplemental first round, the Orioles altered Beavers' swing, and the returns were immediate: his contact rate, in-zone contact rate and ability to lay off pitches out of the zone were all above-average to plus when compared to his peers in the Carolina League. More impressively, in a small pro sample, Beavers managed to hit 16% of his batted balls at 95 mph or harder between a launch angle of 10 and 30 degrees—optimal hard contact—which was well above the league average of 11%. Beavers has a chance to advance to the cozy confines of Double-A Bowie by year’s end as a 21-year-old.

I was there tonight in Wilmington and Beavers' triple was impressive. He moves really well and looks like he can add size to an already big frame. His first three at bats were all well hit balls.

Could you assess if he’s an above average corner outfielder?

I can't provide an opinion on that, unfortunately. Too many other distractions where we were sitting to focus for long. An older adult couple behind us seized on the opportunity to chat to new people in the section (us) and clearly they are there often enough to treat the games like a mixer.

All I could note was the damage his swings were doing to the ball and his baserunning.

Better than Jack Cust, and a great fit for a Chris Berman bumblin', stumblin' call.    I think from the moment of the draft pick Cody Bellinger tool kit comps were mentioned, and from the few videos I've seen so far they seem okay for shorthand.

That kind of guy I think the basic question is can the Hit tool progress far enough to hit enough (.225?) for the power, speed, patience, etc not to get buried under 200+ strikeouts.    .265 is an All-Star, and .300 is an MVP.

    • People are being a bit ridiculous with the holier than thou takes criticizing a little humor. I am not saying what happened couldn’t cause a significant concussion, but it would be a bit of a fluke if it did. Mullins barely hit him with the bat and he had a helmet on. The fact that it was in the back of the head did make him more vulnerable, but this wasn’t the type of thing you see and think he was lucky to be alive.  Guys have probably hit their heads harder on the top of the dugout or on the fence making catches.  And note this comes from someone whose son has suffered severe concussions and who is well aware of the dangers associated with them. In short, people need to lighten up a bit on guys like Roy.  It was a little gallows humor.
    • Yeah, you read that wrong. LA2 is one of my favorite posters here and he knows it. No harm, no foul. If you aren't familiar with the game threads, it doesn't matter what the team is doing, people complain about it and people did make that same joke in the game thread long before Roy said it here. Game thread in summary - when the O's are not doing well, it's insufferable, when they are doing well, it's mildly less insufferable. There, that wasn't hard. I'd appreciate it if you didn't assume I'm throwing shade at people. I'll leave that up to you to do, you're really good at it.
    • Comp a. Like Gunnar, and beavers…
    • Wasn't Westburg a 2nd round draft pick?  It's a little early to judge last year's draft.
    • Before Elias.  They generally haven’t missed on a 1st round or 1st round comp pick with the position players.   I trust they’ll make a good decision at #22 and #32.   Their track record in rounds 2-4, particularly on college position players and specifically the last three drafts is suspect.
    • Anyone want to guess what it would take to get Crochet from the White Sox?  We could send SG over to ask politely and remind them of what they missed out on Ortiz.  I'm sure that wouldn't stir up a hornet's nest.
