Huh?

How about he plays himself off Catcher before we worry about that?

I think people are just so excited about the bat that they want him off catcher. The bat might only be 1.5 seasons away. As a catcher he likely is 3 seasons away.

I can't think of any instances in which a minor league catcher was held up for a season and a half because his glove wasn't ready.  Are you thinking of anything specific?

We have seen other teams promote guys under 20 that play catcher.

Do you think that kid that plays for the Padres is going to be held back because of his position?

The O’s have a stud catcher under control for 5 more seasons.  They have every reason to be patient with Basallo.  Anyway, we’ll see how he does as he moves up the ladder.  He’s doing well at Delmarva but he’s not so dominant there that there’s any rush to move him up.

Isn't it only 4 more after this season because of his ROY #2 finish or were you counting this current one?

That wasn't what I said at all.

I was saying that it isn't a given that a talented young catcher won't be promoted before the age of 20.

Promoted where, to hi A?  Sure.  Creed Willems was promoted last week and he doesn’t turn 20 until Sunday.  Pudge Rodriguez was in the majors at 19.

Exactly.

I was pushing back against the statement that a catcher would take 3 years instead of a year and a half.

I think there is a pretty good chance that kid for the Padres makes his debut at 18.

I think it depends on his defense.  Pudge was studly defensively from day one.  He wasn’t much of a hitter until later.   Show me a bad defensive catcher who was in the majors at age 20.

Point is, there’s a defensive threshold a catcher has to meet.  And if a player can’t stick at catcher, then the threshold for what he has to do on offense goes up.

So back to Basallo.  He has a good arm, and my general impression is that he’s solid defensively for a young catcher in low A.   He’s not the Ryan Mountcastle of low A catchers, assigned to a position he obviously will never be able to handle. But that doesn’t mean he’s ready defensively to move up the ladder, or that they’ll move him the minute they think he’s ready for a promotion offensively.

the Os will need him as a catcher, Adley will be traded in about 3 years to get max value for him with controllable years , Angelos will never pay him a market value contract, hopefully they won’t make the same mistake they made with Manny

You should buy some Powerball tickets today.
