As Good As This Team Has Been, They Seem To Have Trouble Beating Talented Teams Outside The Division.

Not a gripe, just an observation I've noticed. Despite their record, SD is one of those talented  teams. I think that's the only thing keeping TB alive for the AL East title. They way the O's have taken care of the AL East, their lead should be more than two games.

This could be an issue in the playoffs. Winning the division is vital.

Of course, Tampa *also* having one of the top 5 records in baseball has had *nothing* to do with the AL East remaining close.

I do think this team tends to have a little brother mentality against the superstar squads, regardless of how those teams are performing. I had a feeling we'd lose 2 of 3 in SD because we have a hard time pitching to this type of loaded up lineup because of the way our average to above-average pitchers have to nibble away to have success. If the stars don't inflict the damage, they set it up. SD is a team that has beaten itself more than anyone else has though. They're a good team.

Not sure what there is to do about this problem though. Snell pitches well against everyone, that's why he's good. Same can be said for other good pitchers and good lineups. Hopefully the bullpen reinforcements are here soon and we can get back to a place where SPs only have to give us 5 innings again before the BP locks it down.

Our biggest hope is that we go on one of our torrid runs through mid October when nobody can beat us in a series no matter what they throw at us. We've positioned ourselves pretty well to at least get there so far. Whatever happens will happen once we're there.

The pitching for the most part has been good to great. The offense has been really spotty. There's a lot of guys that have gone cool at the same time and of course that makes them look worse than they really are.

They have also run into some really good pitching, that does happen.

Agree. The matchups were really bad for us in the SD series, it's not a surprise they lost 2 out of 3. Not a huge deal either. If they score 2 or 3 runs a game against Oakland, then we can be concerned.

You want to play .500 vs the good teams while you beat up on the bad teams.  That is how you have a good season so far we have done a good job with that.  Your not going to score a lot of runs against good pitching teams that is why they are good pitching teams.  The pitching has been fine so far this road trip minus the one Flaherty start.  The offense does need to pick it up though as some of the older vetren guys need to start hitting better if we are going to have a successful post season.  Santander, Hays, and Mullins are gonna have to play better down the stretch and in the playoffs.

    • Very weak.  OTOH, there's still a possibility that Jackson Merrill won't win in the NL.  Who didn't want Cowser to have had that rookie season?
    • Who’d a thunk it? There’s a chance? Almost like it’s a long season. Now if only that Mayo guy would do something.
    • Jeez, it really was a welcome game tonight.  I had a good buzz going...   Now I have to factor in your chronic angst.  Thanks man.
    • If we enter the Yankees series down by three games, we have a mathematical chance. However, we are going to have to intentionally walk Judge and Soto every single AB. The athletics did us no favors tonight.  Still four games out..
    • I know. I'm a hand wringer and a whiner when it comes to this team. I sometimes annoy myself with all this baseball nonsense. But really deep down,I'm still the 8 year old who lived and died with every Oriole game. Still. Im that kid. So when this team was really horrible like for most of the second half, it almost made me nauseous just to watch them lose in all kinds of ways. Then all those injuries in a wave. I really felt they weren't going to make the postseason at all. But baseball is a crazy game, and a light switch can be turned on in an instant. Maybe that Santander walk off HR on Thursday threw a switch. Because Friday night, this was a different team. They still strike out a lot, and Burnes was brilliant, but I feel maybe something is moving. Seeing Coluombe come in and strike two batters out, and Webb, not as good, but good enough with a big lead...and to see Cowser and McCann blast two, and Tony again with a HR...It got my juices flowing. Look, maybe they wont play well this weekend, maybe they will. And then the dreaded Yankees might break our hearts next week. But why think that way now.?Urias is coming, then Westburg, then maybe Mounty, and even possibly Grayson at the end . If we can somehow put the pieces together and get our mojo back, and have the players contribute, we maybe, just maybe, might have a little ray of hope.I still think this roster is talented when all our pieces are together, and as good as anyone when we are playing well. So, I'm not asking for a miracle. I'm just asking for a chance to see this team with most of the pieces together again, and compete.Maybe it's even a long shot, but I am still that 8 year old living and dying for a chance to see my boys make me proud. And these are my boys.
    • Velocity was 1.5-2mph down across the board. Movement was good, especially the sweeper. The fastballs worry me at that velocity though... not sure he should be immediately high leverage in the way he used to be.
    • Nicely done. Lol. Yes I remember that with Minnesota.
