Jorge Lopez is Back

Jorge is an interesting case right now. He really doesn't look the same and has been a bit of a liability. In terms of performance, his K/BB performance is good (13/1) but he's been very hittable with 13 H and 4 HR allowed in 10.1 IP. He's gotten away, technically, without any losses or blown saves, but he has had bad outings in several important spots in close games.

Should they DFA him to get another arm up for the push for the division?

There are a few considerations:

  • He cannot be on the playoff roster since he was not in the org by Sep 1
  • He CAN be on next year's roster (in the likely Felix-less bullpen) and if they figure him back out over the weekend, he can be an asset
  • The go-to AAA options (Baker, Baumann, Irvin, Vespi, Krehbiel) are all ineligible to be called up in his place since they were demoted too recently. Voth or even TJ McFarland (who has a 1.86 ERA in 20 relief outings for the Tides) seem like candidates if they do call someone up for length.
  • If he's DFAd, I believe he goes through waivers again. Would he be claimed? The fact the O's were able to claim him last time suggests that basically every team passed on him in early September.

I'm guessing that Jorge will stick around. But I also think if Elias hadn't painted himself into a corner by making all those shuttle relievers ineligible at the same time, Jorge might have been sent packing already.

It's very odd he's still here, considering he's not going to be playoff eligible, and is still struggling despite a couple of weeks working with our coaching staff.  His being on the 40 man is directly restricting our ability to add a player to the 40 man from the minors, to then call up and help the exhausted bullpen in the push for the division clinch.

If we want to take a flyer on fixing him later, fine.  DFA him, and even if he doesn't clear for some reason, he's on a one year deal... we can try to sign him to a minor league deal in the off season.

If one of the fringe teams wants to offer him a big league deal, c'est la vie, not getting to try a future experiment to rebuild Lopez definitely falls into the "oh well" category.

I believe that he is under team control for next year. It's his final year of arbitration.

If he was becoming a FA this winter, I think he'd already be gone and maybe never would have been brought in to begin with. This was a 2024 bullpen play.

My bad, I thought MN used his final arbitration year.  You're right, he's currently (2023) on ARB 2.

He is under team control but it really means nothing because no chance they offer him any type of number even close to what he likely could command in arb.

He’s looking at a non gtd roster invite type contract or a very low gtd salary with incentives. The Os can offer him this whether he’s part of the org or not.

Good point about his arb rate which would likely be $4M+ given the 3.5M this year.

With that in mind, I'd personally cut bait today and bring up Voth or McFarland as a length option for the next few days.

    • It is absolutely possible. In 2022, the Mets gave a QO to Bassitt, Nikki, and DeGrom. The Red Sox gave a QO to Boegarts and Eovaldi. The Yankees gave a QO to Judge and Rizzo. The Dodgers gave a QO to Turner and Anderson. I know that it seems to be a foregone conclusion that Santander will not be on the team after this season, and while I generally agree that it is more probable than not that he will not be re-signed, I do think there is a non-zero chance that he will be retained. I think he is the most likely of Mullins, Hays, and himself to be retained, even if it is a small chance. The team has told us how they feel about his bat because he plays essentially everyday, and I have heard Kostka say that they value his clubhouse presence.
    • Santander won’t get a QO, and if he did, he would accept. His defense is declining and we have too many capable youngsters who should replace him effectively. But to your question, I don’t know if there’s a limit, but I doubt it.
    • O's will probably have to wait till July for a trade because there are so many more buyers than sellers.  I think teams like the Blue Jays, Rays Tigers and Mets are likely to be sellers but they are still in the race although not very good teams as constituted.
    • No Scott. He’s way too undependable. We need someone who WON’T enter a game and walk folks like he’s promoting a healthy lifestyle. He’s been a lot bette4 this season, but he’s too undependable, and we already have too many of those. No Flaherty either. That’s like taking your GF back after she cheated on you.
    • The team's continued success has really put Elias on the spot IMO and I don't see a Flaherty type as an option anymore.  My money is on a sensible trade that comes at a price high enough that most of us here, including myself, won't like, but a premium comes with having bad luck and that's where the O's are at the moment.
    • I would be very surprised if every last one of the GM's Elias talks to about quality starting pitching doesn't start by asking about Westburg and the rest.  Again, I think it's a mistake to believe that the O's have a ton of leverage here.  They certainly have some, and Elias is smart and disciplined, but I don't see any bargains.  I especially don't see the luxury of acting like youth and multiple years of control is any kind of rigid starting point for the O's.
    • I say this as someone who defended Cowser like 2 posts ago, but like his fWAR number is entirely dependent on how much you're buying his defense.  I can totally buy the argument that maybe OAA is overrating him a bit, so he's not really on pace to be a 5.5 win player.  The OAA number is pretty eye-popping.
