I have some friends and family that are Phillies fans.

They are celebrating this.

It’s interesting to think about it that way. No one cares that it’s too many years or too much money.  Just that he stayed.

I don’t want to see the Os piss away money whether they can do or not….but there’s also something to be said about your team doing whatever it takes to win and not caring about consequences that you can navigate around long term..if you have ownership willing to navigate them.

No one in Philly is going to care if the Phillies win the WS in the next 2 or 3 years and then are a team with a bloated payroll on the decline.  Flags fly forever.  I wouldn't want the O's to sign a FA like Nola because the O's don't have the payroll to rival the Phillies, but at some point, you have to push a bunch of chips into the center of the table.

It’s $11 mm more than Chris Davis got, and Nola will probably be a lot more productive.  If I’m a Phillies fan, I’m definitely happy about this.

That’s a low bar to hurdle. Pretty sure you and I combined for a better WAR than Chris Davis did in the last couple of years of that contract.

Stephen Strasburg.

Stephen Strasburg got $245,000,000 and produced -.5 bWAR.

Chris Davis got $161,000,000 and produced -5.9 bWAR.

I'm not sure how to do the math on this one. Since it's negative, do you multiple the WAR by the contract? If so, Davis was actually worse per WAR. But I don't know.
