Trade for Tatis

Tatis signed a 13 year/$340 million contract in 2021.  He has played the first 3 years and has the following balance left from Cot's. ,24:$11M, 25:$20M, 26:$20M, 27:$25M, 28:$25M, 29-36:$36M annually.  My plan would be to extract the maximum value from Tatis before his price rockets up in 2029.  He mostly played the outfield and won a Gold Glove in RF.  Is a trade at a reasonable level for something like Santander, Westburg/Ortiz, Cowser/Kjerstad, Povich possible?  Seems like Tatis has had problems in the San Diego clubhouse.  Would that be a reason not to trade for him?

Tatis's value will plummet as his salary increases and he ages. There is a significant risk of ending up with an underwater type of contract if you don't flip him at the right time. I also doubt San Diego entertains an offer that doesn't include Holliday.

No.  1) I don't want him on our team as I don't care for him 2) PED issues 3) too expensive, and if we are willing to spend t that kind of money,  I'd rather spend it locking up Gunnar or Holiday 4) when/if we trade our depth it should be done to improve the pitching staff moreso than position players imo 5)  how do you propose to extract the value out of him before his price rockets up?  Think we will just be able to unload him and his 36M a year then?

To be fair he had 5.5 WAR this season. He’s only 24….but I’m guessing the last 2-3 of that contract will be a total loss. If you could get 4-5 WAR for the next 6 years what’s it worth. 
 

im not Angelos….if I was I’d be asking them to pay half of his salary in years 8 to 10.

He would only be 34 in the last year of his contract.  It's not as bad as some long term contracts that end in the player's early 40's.

Okay, so after the shock had worn off that you’re not kidding…I understand what you’re getting at. But this is the Orioles and the Orioles don’t do $36m annually. That’s half the payroll. 
 

There’s a million other ways to get the best out of what is available before this would even be considered.

I looked at it and decided I want the 300 million going to our guys. Good player and decent bargain.

36 million at reasonable levels of MLB inflation is probably going to be a palatable amount in 2029-2036.  If it's not we can offer someone a bunch of money to give us prospects and take it off our hands.

 

Another question would be whether we want to pay the price for that.  It would cost us Holliday and half our farm, but he's probably a decent bet to outperform Holliday for Holliday's cost controlled years.

 

Regarding our cheap ownership, the main thing is convincing JA that the salary is going to be offset by MASN revenue growth and rev share increases.  The actual price is still likely to be a bargain, and we could easily have a bottom-10 payroll while extending Gunnar/Adley and taking his contract.
