He must just want to go back to Korea. Someone here would give him more than 3-4 for a year. Probably figures less stress/taxes.

I'm thinking he will have some pretty lucrative endorsement deals over there, maybe enough to make up the difference or at least come close enough.

rWAR has Ryu returning home basically dead even with Chan Ho Park at 20 WAR.

South Korea's a nation of about ~50 million, or about 2.5X New York City here.    I imagine all these guys are/were sports heroes on a national scale.

Chronologically by birth:

1973, Chan Ho Park

1982, Shin-Soo Choo

1987, Hyun-Jin Ryu

1995, Ha-Seong Kim

1998, Jung Hoo Lee (Google machine tells me his dad was the "Ichiro of Korea" and won both MVP's and championships).

It is Kim the Padres are moving Xander over to 2B for.     He'll be an interesting free agent next winter.    The Padres-Dodgers South Korea for real games just a month from today!

Sign me up for the KBO. As someone with friends and family on both sides of the aisle, pretty ok sounds better than what I’m going to be dealing with this year.

It’s pretty easy to ignore politics if you choose. I doubt Ryu cares.

This is a bit disingenuous, he has 1M in incentives also. Mateo doubled his WAR last year too.

He did, though Rosario is younger and in 2022 posted the same rWAR as Mateo has in his career to date.    The initial report I ran into yesterday didn't yet have the incentives.

The result is the biggest percentage win for the Clubs relative to some of the crowdsourced guesses among this winter's top ~50 free agents so far.

I think the Orioles see something they like well enough in Mateo they are still trying to unlock so don't mind the probable higher $$$/WAR as an investment.

A couple things to like with Mateo,

- He had a stretch last year in April where he looked like Alphonso Soriano.

- He and Mullins were running wild last year before both of them suffered leg injuries. Remember the Royals series and off of Chapman in particular.

- We already lost Bautista. Mateo was our other extra inning weapon.

- Can he actually play a passable CF?

    • The outfield might be slick from all the rain. I think that can influence lineup decisions.
    • @Bahama O's Fanor a free trial of any streaming platform. YouTube TV, Directtv, etc.
    • I’ve been rending my garments over Adley and his struggles for months now. But I will say that it seems like a bit of an odd time to come together as a group on the notion of benching him — just as he’s been starting to show some signs of being Adley again.  Over the last week of the season, Adley had a 50% hard hit rate and an average EV of 89.9 MPH. Those numbers absolutely dwarf what he was doing for months, when he was sitting at more like a 26% HH rate and an 85 MPH EV. Anecdotally, I can’t even remember the last time we saw Adley drive a ball into the left-center gap like he did multiple times against MIN. That’s Adley at his very best, and it was a sight for sore eyes.  I’m not sold that he’s 100% back, and I would still stick with McCann catching Burnes tomorrow (especially since using Adley as the DH is viable with a LHP starter in Ragans). But I sincerely doubt we can run the table without at least a few stretches of Adley being Adley — so I think this recent spurt is probably enough to warrant sending him out there every day still, in hopes that he really is getting it locked back in.
    • Apparently, if you just waited to buy tickets, you could just basically go for free. Well done orioles.
    • Well, they likely would not have drafted an overslot SS with the second round pick if they had taken another HS SS first overall, so would you rather have Henderson and Rutschman or just Witt?
    • It’s my understanding that nationally televised games are usually blacked out. Consider a free trial subscription of Fubo if they are still offering it.
    • The Orioles starters absolutely have to do better against the Royals. You can't ask this bullpen to pitch most of the game and expect to win. Right now I probably trust Coulombe the most and Soto (which I never would have guessed a couple weeks back). Perez has been really shaky recently to the point I'm wondering is he nursing a tired arm or minor injuey. Cano hasn't been good as well and O's really need him to get back into a groove. And Akin is usually trustworthy, but only starting the inning clean.
