Seems like the time to get this done was before the season started. I doubt anything of this magnitude would happen in season, although I would obviously welcome it.

You don’t. Nobody sits around searching for a franchise LF. Not to say they don’t exist. If one falls in your lap you’re thrilled. There’s a reason plenty of teams (Orioles maybe chief among them) tend to draft those up the middle positions.

They spent a 1-2 pick on a guy that I don't think anyone expected to end up in the middle.

Ok, and they spent 4 of the next 5 picks in that draft on up the middle guys. Of Elias’ 5 drafts, 4 of the 1st picks have been up the middle guys.
