Call Basallo Up? (a la Machado 2012)

Seeing highlights from Basallo on the daily has me thinking...is he deserving of a call up like we did with Machado in 2012?  We need a spark...the kid has a ton of energy and is clearly ready physically.

McCann has two jobs: be a leader and play good behind the plate.  Doesn't seem like he's doing well at either lately.  I don't see him involved in the dugout like he has been in the past, and should be the first one helping to lift the crappy attitude our team has right now.

Too crazy of an idea to DFA McCann for Basallo?

Not an insane idea but I dont really feel he is ready.  We are not getting much from McCann so Basallo wouldnt be much worse but I think they want to keep control over his service time better.

So on the one side of the scale, you have the responsible/appropriate development process of a 19-year-old uber-talent at the most complicated/difficult defensive position on the diamond.

And then on the other side, you have the opportunity for two months of possibly marginally upgraded hitting (and severely downgraded defense) at the backup catcher position, playing a couple days a week behind our All-Star starter.

I can definitely see why folks are torn on this.

Why the defense talk?  What is the stereotype with Basallo and his defense?  Billy Ripken says his arm is better than Adley’s. What’s the knock on him?  I think people hear 6’4” catcher and assume that he’s some stiff back there. He’s not.

McCann is sort of Burnes’ personal catcher. So between that and Basallo is in AA, are the only reasons McCann is still here.

It has nothing to do with stereotyping.

“His arm strength is great and there were times last year when it looked incredible, but Basallo has been popping closer to 1.95 so far this year and his footwork is often pretty sloppy. As is true of a lot of catchers his age, he could stand to be more accurate and consistent coming out of his crouch. His receiving isn’t good, but it isn’t so terrible that it damns him to first base. His ball blocking might though, and it’s this area of Basallo’s game that most needs to improve.”

Ask yourself that when you see McCann in the lineup tomorrow. Are you excited to see McCann tomorrow while we’re trying to avoid the sweep and stop our free fall?

Name one player during the Elias regime that has been promoted to MLB from AA since 2019.

I can’t think of any.

Apart from that, Basallo has had his hands full with AA pitching so far this year.  I don’t know that his play warrants a AAA promotion yet.

I'm pretty fringe when it comes to promotions and I think that's premature.

Mayo and other guys that aren’t named Holliday struggled to get called up and decent playing time. So you’re right …. It’s just not happening.
