Pitching Depth Possible Call Ups Include Brandon Young Per Elias

Elias named the usual suspects when going over the pitching depth in the organization. Triple-A Norfolk’s Chayce McDermott is shelved with a shoulder injury but Cade Povich and Cole Irvin are candidates to return. But Elias also mentioned Norfolk right-hander Brandon Young, signed for $20,000 as an undrafted free agent in the truncated 2020 draft out of Louisiana Lafayette.

You won’t find Young in many prospect rankings, but Baseball America has him 21stin the system. He posted a 4.09 ERA in seven appearances with Double-A Bowie after his reinstatement from the injured list and has a 3.71 ERA in 13 games (11 starts) with Norfolk and has struck out 96 batters in a combined 75 1/3 innings.

Young, who turns 26 later this month, struck out 10 batters in five innings and allowed only one earned run on Aug. 1 in Charlotte. He is “on the radar screen” according to Elias. He barely fits at 6-foot-6.

The Orioles don’t have Young on the 40-man roster and he’s eligible for the Rule 5 draft. Interesting to know that he’s in play if they dip into the minors again for pitching.

This was in Roch’s early morning blog.

I would think it would be Irvin. He can be the long man and protect the pen in blowout games. I could still see us offering Irvin arbitration then cutting bait with him in worst case situation at the end of ST and only having to pay him 20% of his arb figure.

He’s depth to carry all offseason. Heck, we’ll likely do the same with Tate. Pitching depth is just so valuable with all the injuries.

    • Teams are starved for offense. Mounty will have a market as long as the wrist is ok.
    • I believe Mateo was hurt a week before the trade, but was only the the 10 day IL. While that may have had nothing to do with the Norby trade.. it should have. Elias was good with Norby and/or Holliday as the "rookie replacement" options for Mateo. What bothers me about this whole thing was, Norby could've been the right replacement for Mateo.. had Holliday faltered during the stretch run, but Elias seems more inclined to bring in "outsiders" who have MLB experience. Vavra was also an option,...whatever.  Analytics driven I would think, but it could also be a deflection should the draft picks get too overwhelmed. That's the 2-sided coin flip option for Elias. As for the hitting being fixed: Who wants 2 bosses telling you the same thing.. or are they instructing different approaches? I don't get it.  Although I'm not one to delve too deep into anything anymore (EADD), there are games when I feel the hitters have no clue about what to expect from all the SP's they are facing game in & out. Especially the younger SP's. Oh, and for FFS, stop swinging at ball 4 just because it's a fastball count. Fastball counts don't mean diddly anymore, and the O's are a team proving it.
    • Yeah, I agree he needs to be DFA'd ASAP. He's definitely a liability at this point.
    • I didn’t think Povich was too awful last night, facing a nearly all right-handed lineup in the Fenway bandbox.   Obviously the back to back homers were on bad pitches, and really, the whole 3rd inning was kind of rough.  But Povich bounced back nicely from that inning and did a nice job in the 4th and 5th until Hyde pulled him after a two-out walk in the 5th.   I’d call this one to grow on.
    • I think I read it’s split between Chicago and the Orioles. But who cares either way.
    • If they DFA Eloy, do they still have to pay his $1.5M buyout?
    • I would add Livan Soto to that list.
