Since 2019, a total of 1,494 players have made their major league debut -- an average of 50 per team.   As might be expected of a team that went through a rebuild, Mike Elias' Orioles are slightly above that figure.  54 players have made their major league debut with the Orioles since 2019.   Here's a brief breakdown:

Players drafted by the O's during the Elias regime: 10

Players drafted by the O's during the Duquette regime: 12

Players acquired by trade during the Elias regime: 6

Players acquired by trade during the Duquette regime: 8

Rule 5 picks during the Elias regime: 4

Players signing as free agents after being dropped by another team or playing in another country: 9 (1 signed during the Duquette regime, 8 signed during the Elias era)

Players acquired on waivers during the Elias era: 4

International amateur free agents signed during the Duquette era: 1

Overall, that's 32 players acquired by Elias, and 22 inherited from Duquette.

Of the 54 players, only 22 remain in the organization today.   Of those, 7 are back in the minors presently, while 6 are on the major league IL (Wells, Bradish, Bautista, Westburg, Rodriguez and Kjerstad).   Only 9 are on the active major league roster: Urias, Mountcastle, Kremer, Akin, Rutschman, Henderson, Cowser, Mayo and Holliday.  Of the 32 who are gone, four were traded in "buy" trades (Ortiz, Hall, Stowers and Norby), one was traded after being put on waivers (Baumann), two were sold, three were Rule 5 picks returned to their original teams, and the rest were released or waived and claimed by another team.

In MLB as a whole, of the 1,494 players who have debuted in the last 6 years, 679 have produced over 0.0 rWAR in their careers, a ratio of about 45%.   For the Orioles, only 19 of the 54 have produced positive WAR while they were Orioles, a ratio of about 35%.  (This is a slightly apples to oranges comparison, because some players might have reached the plus column after leaving the organization, such as Joey Ortiz.)

The Orioles' debut class of 2020 deserves a special shout out.   The O's only debuted five players that season, but all five are still with the organization, four of whom are on the major league roster (Urias, Mountcastle, Kremer and Akin; Zimmermann is still with the org in AAA).   By comparison, the entire 2019 class of 8 is gone, and the whopping 16-player class of 2021 has only one representative remaining in the org-- Tyler Wells, who is on the IL.

So what do I make of this?   It's one thing to make it to the major leagues, and its something else to stay there for any considerable length of time.   Of the major league players debuting from 2019 through 2024, here's how many have played in a major league game this year:

2019: 118 out of 261 (2 of 8 who debuted as Orioles)

2020: 96 of 212 (4 of 5)

2021: 129 of 265 (4 of 16)

2022: 179 of 303  (7 of 13)

2023: 187 of 261 (5 of 6)

Orioles who were one year and done in the majors: Chandler Shepherd (2019), Matt Wotherspoon (2019), Manny Barreda (2021), Jay Flaa (2021), Conner Greene (2021), Mickey Jannis (2021), Isaac Mattson (2021), Max Sceroler (2021), Konner Wade (2021), Yusniel Diaz (2022), Cody Sedlock (2022), Chris Vallimont (2023).  That's 12 of our 54 debuts who never saw a second year in the majors.   Four of them (Jannis, Diaz, Sedlock and Vallimont) have never seen a second game in the majors.   Maybe there's still hope for some of them, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

He retired last year.

Actually, last Monday was my 2-year anniversary.

At some point this winter when nothing’s happening I’ll probably bump this thread and give some details of what happened to all these guys when they left the O’s (if they did).
