Jason Heyward released by the Dodgers after clearing waivers

Not sure the extent of Mullins injury, but I wouldn’t be opposed to signing Heyward. The Os are already in LA and he could start tonight. I bet he would play with a chip on his shoulder and wouldn’t cost the Os anything other than the remainder of the season at league minimum(Dodgers are on the hook for anything over that).  He could come around alright with consistent playing time.

Lefty, solid defender: https://dodgerblue.com/dodgers-roster-jason-heyward-released-after-clearing-waivers/2024/08/26/

If Mullins is going to be out for any amount of time, think he's a solid option for us. Anything to keep O'Hearn out of the OF.

I actually thought about bringing up his name. Would need to add him by Aug 31 to be playoff eligible.

Point to me would also be even if Mullins is healthy the OF depth is poor. Kjerstad is out.

Hmmm...

LH hitter who hasn't hit since leaving StL in 2015.

Primarily a RF who has played a total of 24 games in the last 2 years in CF (31 PO with one error).

35 years old and aging fast....

I'd pass on him.

The one concern I would have is him being a RF. Santander’s spot. He hit well last year vs RHP.

You are adding him as a depth/bench piece. Nothing more.

Why?

You don't need another LH hittting RF. Especially one that can't hit LH pitching. This year he didn't hit RH all that well.

He has never played LF, which is where the O's have a need. Could he play LF? Maybe. But do you want to risk it in a playoff race?

He's a defensive upgrade in RF, a defensive downgrade in CF over Mullins and Cowser, and huge ? in LF.

I'm not certain he's worth the 26 man spot. He's stolen a total of 7 bases in the last 3 years.

Oh, and his post season slash line is .148/.202/.237 in 43 games and 145 plate appearances. Not a SSS.

Am I missing something?

Hasn't hit sine 2015?  Last year, he had an OPS+ of 118, 15 HRs, and a .340 OBP, so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

LAD used him rather selectively against RH pitching.

According to BB Ref 92.6% of his 377 plate appearances were against RH pitching. This year 93.4% of his 197 PA are against RH pitching and he hasn't gotten it done.

I think the league has adjusted and he hasn't.

I don’t think you are missing anything. We just lacking in depth right now.

Question would be is he worth 14th bat spot in September?
